A great stone falls from the sky!: meteoric awesomeness
« on: November 29, 2010, 02:11:31 pm »

I was thinking about meteorites recently, and thought of this: What if, during fortress mode (or, more likely, during worldgen), there could be meteorite impacts, which would create a deposit of a procedurally generated metal, gem, or stone at the impact site (occasionally a mixture of them). In fortress mode this could be accomplished by spawning a block of land one Z-level below the highest Z-level on the map, and allowing it to fall. I don't know how it would make craters, but, oh well, that can be figured out later. I guess most of them would take up one tile, but you could occasionally get huge honking things, like a 3x4x3 block or something.

What do ya think?

Why?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I think this is in the Aboveground Diversity megathread as well. Apologies for not linking to it, its a pain to grab the link from my phone. For this to work right we really need falling rocks to be fixed.

i think this could happen during worldgen.  it would definitely spice up embark sites. anything to add diversity to above ground terrain is a good thing (in my book).  even though most of the time i like to embark on flat with a river and an exposed magma pipe.

Why?
That's not in the dwarven vocabulary.

I like it... but during world-gen please.  A random "your entire fortress is now dead, suddenly" isn't much fun - but embarking at an impact site would rock.

It wouldn't be terrible to have it happen during fortress mode. Once the overland map is more accessible, it'll be more likely to happen elsewhere in the world.
Actually having it hit your fortress would be something for bragging rights, especially if you manage to survive it.
Sure, it'd wipe out everything in the area on the surface, and maybe caverns would collapse, but it'd create an opportunity to try and salvage from that.

Why not in DF mode ? The more fun the better.

Yeah, what dbuhos said. And besides, if it was small (say, a boulder or rough gem instead of 'rough-hewn wall' tiles), it probably wouldn't destroy a fortress. Might bean a dwarf in the head, but not much else.

That is not how meteors work.

What about that women in the states who got hit in the leg by a meteorite and only got a bruise?

That largely seems to be the exception. Seems that sometimes meteorites can slow down enough not to be completely lethal. It all depends on the angle it strikes from I imagine.

Depends on how much fun were talking about. If it makes a small 5 z-level deep creator then fine... that is workable. But when I think of an impact site I think of things like this.   What fun is it simply having your fortress suddenly dead?

Now... if were talking about an event you can cause... and prepare for....

This could tie in nicely with the build higher suggestion.
