Dwarven Armor

All I can find is large iron armor that to my understanding my dwarved peasant cannot equip. Where can I buy the stuff, of do I have to murder some people?

I'm sure by the time toady gets too old to program, DF will have reached a stage where as it is sentient enough to program itself.
It won't program itself, it'll be too busy taking breaks and attending parties to code.

As far as I know, you can only find dwarven armor you made in fortresses you've lost/abandoned, although maybe you'll get lucky and find relevant equipment in bandit camps. Usually I only find human gear, though, so I wouldn't rely on it. :-\

Goblins and kobolds drop dwarf-sized gear, which is actually an incredibly easy way to get steel armor and weapons if you get ambushed by a pimped-out enough bandit leader.

Just pray you get ambushed by a goblin or kobold group and they have a pretty good chance of dropping steel and iron equipment.

I stand corrected. My own fault for forgetting about goblins, but I didn't know kobolds used dwarf-sized gear. I'll have to check that out the next time I run a kobold.

I happened upon a winged freak that liked to eat dwarves. Among the dwarf dishes were several pieces of dwarf-sized armor.

I have never found dwarf armor, I've only found clothing for the dwarf, no bronze chestplates or iron gauntlets or the like.

Just to clarify I believe I found iron gauntlets, a bronze helmet, bronze greaves, and bronze high boots that fit my adventuring dwarf.

Loot large lairs or shrines that are near to Dwarf fortresses or mountain halls. If there are dwarf corpses around then you have a good chance of getting some dwarf armor. I got two Titan quests today and found good quality iron and steel armor items in Dwarf size, enough to cover all body parts. I've found some in Dragon lairs before too.

Goblins can be a good source of armor too, though they're dangerous. I think a Goblin ambush is nastier than a lot of megabeasts, especially when they're packing iron armor all round.

To boost the chances of a Dwarf Adventurer finding lairs near Dwarf settlements, when you make the character you should pick a Dwarf civ that overlaps or borders a human civ. That way you should start off in a human civ near to your Dwarf civ.

I'm almost certain that, even when using a dwarf, Kobold clothing is still listed as Small [whatever] so goblins are the only real option. Well, unless you run into a dwarf bandit group, which is a potential goldmine as well as deathtrap.

If you don't mind modifying the raws, you can change the [DEFAULT_SITE_TYPE:CAVE_DETAILED/DARK_FORTRESS/TREE_CITY] entry under Entity_Default to
[DEFAULT_SITE_TYPE:CITY]. This way you have the ability to buy goods in towns no matter which civilization you belong to.

Probably because there's no tree definitions available for the buildings; or even more simply that buildings on mountains are prohibited the same as buildings in water. So you could have a massive dwarf civ who's built only on mountains, and never encounter shops.
You have to set the starting biome for the civ to grassland, forest, or something non-mountain.

Yeah; I forgot to mention the need to do that. Roughly half of a given dwarven civilization's cities are going to be built in mountains so half of them won't actually exist. Those cities are that on the edge of mountain ranges will, but not those on the actual range. I have actually found one village right smack dab in the middle of the range, but it was part of a small valley where the biome was a lake and small sand desert. The tree requirement doesn't come into play is my guess since dwarves can build houses out of fungiwood and towercap logs.

I have a world generated where dwarves build castles as well, but I haven't actually visited one to see if they exist or not if the site is located in a mountain range. Since they follow the lay of the land and are built of stone, that might be possible.

Which makes sense, considering kobolds are on average 20,000 cm^3, only 1/3 the size of dwarves, elves, and goblins (60,000 cm^3), and humans being only one sixth larger than those three (70,000 cm^3) makes their equipment incompatible.
