Personally, I'm rather fond of the habit. It doesn't cost me that much to either say or answer "good morning" or "how are you?" questions, and it generally makes both sides feel somewhat better.
Overuse, like greeting the same people more than once per day is, of course, not only annoying, but also silly.
I'm speaking entirely from the perspective of British English, and the associated culture. I'd guess that an average American might feel differently - what with all those notions of personal space, and "not your business" attitude.

I don't think I qualify as a peasent.
If you're not a peasant, then you must be burgeoise! Off to the Siberia with you!

How about a slave instead!

I never say good morning or whatever, I just say Hi. Then have a conversation.

My reasoning is: most people would probably rather be left alone if asked. People you're dealing with, like at a fast food place or something, probably just want to hand you your stuff and hear a moderately sincere "thank you" for it.

Merchant?

Oh, I just had an antidote pop in my mind.  One of my friends used to work at a gas station and the amount of rudeness he got was ridiculous.  He'll have conversations that go like this:

Have a nice day!
Okay.

Hahaha, hehehe, it's like he's Han Solo or something.

Or they might enjoy being treated like human beings for a change.
Bleh, must be cultural differences.

I think we need a Realmfigher Hedonism Derail stamp or somthing.

I am most certainly NOT the Burgeoise
Either you're the capitalist burgeoise pigs who need to be overthrown, or the oppressed proletariat workers who must rebel for the glory of Marx. If there are no capitalist burgeoise pigs who need overthrowing, then get working on becoming one so we can overthrow you! If there are no oppressed proletariat workers then what the hell did you do to your country?

Honestly, I hate pointless small talk, so I try to break off greatings like this as soon as I can.

I believe that's what the thank you is for.
