Good Morning
« on: November 29, 2010, 11:48:24 am »

Is it just me?  Am I really that "rude" because I do not tell everyone I see "Good Morning" before I start talking?

I'm sitting at work right now and for the past 6 months or so, the guy who empties the trash walks by and insists on saying "Good Morning" to me, and I'm thinking about not replying with "Good Morning."  I don't see the point of doing it.

There's also one guy in my work group that will insist on saying "Good Morning/Evening/etc" if I message him with something. I can assume the first thing he will reply with is a singular IM of greeting before answering the question I asked.

I don't consider myself rude, but I don't see the purpose of needlessly greeting all the time.

Well, not to be rude, but this topic seems more of a general discussion thing rather then DF general discussion, so you might wanna move it there.

And its normal for people to act like that in a work environment, some people just consider it a must have to be professional, but that tends to die out after they get used to everyone around them.

I think it's common politeness to answer when you are greeted.

Yeah, I understand the politeness, but I guess it's beginning to really bug me that it's persistent... every morning, every time I initialize conversation.  These two people specifically (even if I don't initialize conversation) insist on wishing me a good morning in passing or before continuing discussion and it feels to me like it's too much.

I guess it's just upbringing on my part, but I don't understand the need to continuously do this.

I've gotten in the habit of not making the obligatory "hi how are you" greeting at the driven thrus anymore. I almost always get a weird reaction, either semi-hostile or excessively friendly, as a result. It's weird how people get unnerved by silence.

And to quote Rusty Ryan:

"What are you, suicidal or something?"

"Only in the mornings."

I've never really grasped the "How are you?" sort of greetings.  It's like, it begs a response, but you're really not supposed to respond with anything other than "Fine".  Saying anything other than "Fine" comes off as a desperate ploy to talk about yourself for a while.  And everybody reacts to the question and response differently.  I just don't even answer it, and start or respond with "Sup", which is basically the "How are you?" question shortened so much that it's not really a question anymore.

Presuming that "how are you?" comes from "How do you do?" The correct response should be "How are you?"

Hello.  How do you do?
How are you?
I asked you first.  How are you?
No, I asked that.  You asked, how do you do?
And you didn't answer me.
Of course I did.  I said, how are you?
How is that an answer?
You haven't answered me either.
I asked first!
And I'm asking now.  How are you?
Well, I was fine, until just now.
