I don't know much about modding, but you can wall him in to keep him from causing trouble. Walls or locked doors are good for this. Or you can do some save scumming and hope for a different outcome.

Station your military near bye? Since its unwallable magma is out of the question?

Close him in somehow; if need be relocate your workshops. If a dwarven caravan comes before he snaps, they may have some silk for you to give him.

One easy method is to assign a guaranteed-mood-fail Dwarf a war dog.  While war dogs are decidedly ineffective against anything armored, they'll rip through a berserk unarmored Dwarf like a knife through hot butter most of the time.

You said you got magma smelters set up recently. Does that mean you used the magma sea, and therefore went through the caverns? Why not just crack open one of those and set someone to weaving duty? Preferably with a loom set up already, of course.

There should be a way to create a custom reaction to make silk.

Right here. War Dogs are like goddamn sharks when it comes to tantruming tunnel dwellers.

That wasn't technically a miscarriage, but the doctors didn't have a concise term for "gave birth and immediately baptized the baby in liquid fire."
Dwarf Fortress: Killing people so you can draft their dogs into the army.

It'll work if you replace an existing reaction with the new one (keeping the old header and such). Adding new reactions to an existing world won't work, and things tend to go very wrong if you remove one under said circumstances (reactions affect world generation, among other things).

To be fair, I doubt this would actually work without a secondary material definition.
