Depending on the type of firearm and where the bullets hit, a lucky person can survive several dozen shots long enough to call for help. Probably not long enough for the help to arrive, but the point is, bullets aren't as quite as immediately lethal as video games lead us to believe. And as said, a murderer would rather be as far as possible from the scene than counting the victims' pulses.

This didn't occur to me before just now, but I'm also pretty sure that if the guy had called 911 saying that he had been shot, they would have come to help him instead of some random person finding his corpse in his car some period of time later.

Also, I just found out that the call was made just a few minutes before the gunshots were actually heard, so even if it was somehow vaguely related to the murder, they had not been shot at the time the call was made. Or the time the call started, at least.
