And where do you plan to get enough horses for an army?
Well, first you take a boy horse and a girl horse...
It's gonna take a loooooong time to breed tens of thousands of horses for a Mongol horde from just two.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

You aren't doing horse breeding right.

That or I mixed up species again.

It'll just take genetic tampering so the horde and the breeding pair of horses can interbreed. Everyone knows the mongols didn't ride horses but horsey abominations. How fast your mount can go was a great point of parental pride and superior genetics.

And it's entirely unclear whether the offspring of a couple dozen generations of inbreeding will even be able to walk straight.

This was why the Mongols used Calculus.

I mean, if the effects of megaton-yield weapons are linear, something like the Tsar Bomb would heat a 150-mile area to several thousand degrees instantly.

The effects are not linear - the size of the blast is an area function, and the growth in size of the explosion is much lower than the growth in the energy release. At full design yield (100 megatons) and detonated as an airburst, Tsar Bomba would have a fireball radius of 3.79 miles and a blast radius (5 psi, enough to destroy most houses) of 20.3 miles. For the sake of comparison, a 10 megaton explosion would have a 1.96 mile fireball radius and 6.13 mile blast radius.

If you're actually trying to render an area completely uninhabitable, cobalt-60 bombs are much more effective. The only downside compared to salt is having to reapply it every century or so.

Of course, no one has (officially) built a cobalt-salted bomb while about a dozen nations have more conventional fission or thermonuclear bombs.

Oh, certainly. Of course, Doctor Strangelove's argument as to the impracticality of the thing stands.

In other news, I actually got to handle a very small quantity of Co-60 yesterday.

I also watched a short documentary about the nuclear research facility/waste dump I live downstream from. In other words, I have gone swimming in the world's most radioactive river.

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

Got a ride home from my step-aunt.

She is every single reason I do not want to get a car.

Her car is missing a headlight. She was not wearing her seatbelt(the first thing I do when I get in, period). The car smelled like rotting fish(was a squid). She was doing nearly 80MPH down the highway(speed limit is 55MPH). She stopped to get gas despite the gauge saying full(it's broken), tells the attendant to go full, then gets angry with him when the pump refuses to put more gas in(presumably because it was full). Then she goes to the next pump over and tells that attendant to fill up, and it takes a significant amount of effort for less than a gallon put it, since the pump's overflow prevention device(stops pumping when it's full) was working perfectly fine. Last, when she gets onto my street, she starts doing 50MPH(limit is 30MPH if not less). My street also has few working streetlights, and she completely ignores the signs saying "DEAF CHILD AREA".

I can perfectly understand why you would never want to be in another vehicle with her ever again...but why would any of this keep you from wanting a vehicle of your own? From the sound of it, you clearly have a much greater appreciation for the rules of the road and the reality of driving than she does. I would much rather have you behind the wheel than your step-aunt.

I think the idea is getting hit by someone like her. This is also the reason why if I drive a vehicle, it had better be a tank.

Me as well.
I personally am more scared of everyone else on the road.

Yeah, but from the sound of it pedestrians aren't exactly safe around someone like that anyway (going 50MPH in a residential area, good grief). Guess Akura better just stay indoors forever :P

Helicopters are safe from car accidents. Forget driving, learn to fly.
