I've never understood why people have such a strong aversion to cannibalism- if the food in question is already dead of unrelated causes, obviously. Most people eat meat all the time, and what are dead people if not meat?

Infants drinking breast milk don't kill their mothers, or anyone else for that matter. There are few or no cells present in milk, compared to everything else in it.

There's also the not-so-minor matter of possibly catching nasty diseases from the consumption of human tissue.

Not good enough to stop the prions which cause those diseases I listed. According to the Wiki, the process for sterilizing instruments that might have been contaminated with prions involves copious amounts of bleach and lye.

Yes, we ought to check long pork for prionic diseases just as we ought to check pork for parasitic diseases. This should go without saying. However, since long pork is mostly a black market commodity at the moment, its sellers rarely care for their customers' health enough to bother. Same for the Pacific islands where cannibalism is commonplace but modern medicine isn't. Were cannibalism ever destigmatized in the developed world, properly prepared human meat wouldn't be any worse for health than any other such meat.

By the way, prions can spread through any eaten infected tissue, not just human. They're simply more common in carnivores and omnivores, simply because such creatures actively eat meat and thus carry the risk of infection.
