How come? I've only had one that's erupted but it's at worst slightly uncomfortable.

For me it was a few months of mild pain and the perennial taste of blood, before the bastard sunk back in to the gum. It pops up every month or so for a couple of days just to spite me.

It's not going to be a pleasant experience though.
