And if both sides believe "If I don't vote for the lesser evil, then the other side will vote for the greater evil"?  Then the only reason my non-participation has any bearing on the chances of greater evil is everyone else engaging in self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm saying that everyone else's participation is having negative effects.  If everyone treated a vote as signifying that they truly want a candidate to represent them, then we wouldn't be in this situation.  I'm being the change that I want to see.

While I care about the culture war subset of political topics, I am much, much more upset with the political situation as a whole.  And if my vote for the sake of having input on the culture war will also lend perpetuation to the political situation as a whole, then I don't see it as a net gain.

Last fall I found out that most of the people I work with don't vote. Great stuff.

The fact that so few people vote in most places is still quite weird to me. I mean here it's just compulsory, so everyone votes.

That's pretty stupid. How many people are really informed about the issues? I bet it's not everybody.

Nah not really. You still have the exact same problem with voluntary voting. At least with compulsory voting more of the moderates votes.

I have never voted in my life, as Putin is going to win anyway. Do you guys really have some intrigue in elections?

Desired reaction to lower voting levels: "Oh no, we are losing legitimacy! Better go do what all those non-voters want!"
Actual reaction to lower voting levels: "Cool, I can disregard the interests of even more people! To the corruptionmobile!"

I would like to bring the attention of the gentleman to the words of a modern thinker, have you considered this?
The real solution is to smash capitalism.

What does capitalism have to do with voter turnout, exactly?

It deters the Communist voters from turning up.

Last fall I found out that most of the people I work with don't vote. Great stuff.

The fact that so few people vote in most places is still quite weird to me. I mean here it's just compulsory, so everyone votes. If you time it right so you're at the polling both at a quiet time it takes about 10 minutes to go in stick a few numbers on a couple of pieces of papers & be out. So 10 minutes, around twice every 3? years or so is too much effort for most people?

I understand it.

Your vote is meaningless. Completely and utterly meaningless. It will never, ever, ever in any situation ever make any difference at all. The outcome of the election will be 100% exactly the same regardless of if you vote or not.

Why waste 10+ minutes (it's often much more), the gas to drive there, the hassle of lining up, filling the thing out, etc, for nothing?

I vote because the polling place is like a 2 minute walk from my house, but I understand how completely and utterly pointless it is and if it was further away I probably wouldn't.
