Okay, I've got a couple of stories for this thread. Gotta get back into the writing game.

So there I am preparing for bed a few weeks ago, and I'm attempting to get some water out of my ear. The sensation had been bothering me the whole day, but I hadn't had access to q-tips until that night. I keep trying to knock it free into the cotton, but to no avail. I retract the tip... and hear 3 taps against my eardrum. Perfectly spaced, way too loud for comfort.

I yell and freak right the fuck out, suddenly remembering that one news article about a woman who had a spider make a small home of her ear for almost a week. Having grown up with Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, I have a case of arachnophobia born of seeing Aragog and Shelob splay their monstrous bodies and whiteless eyes across the television. Barely able to control myself, I run and cling to my parents' doorframe and explain my situation. "I think... there's a spider in my ear."

Neither of them believed that my fears were grounded in reality, of course. My mother led me back to the bathroom and continued trying to scrape whatever was in there out with a q-tip, before commenting that she saw a small black hair of some sort. I prayed to all the gods that I did not worship that whatever was in there was not what I feared it to be, and quietly asked her to fetch some tweezers. I clung pitifully to the sink, and she pulled out...

A hair. More than an inch long. I almost collapsed with relief. Nervous laughter all around, I finished up and went to bed, thanking the nameless celestial entities.

After giving up searching the family bookshelves for a strange collection of short stories that I had read some years ago, I grabbed a collection of William Gibson's greatest short stories, Burning Chrome. Glorious, electric prose that distilled his flavor of sci-fi to a single tome. Most were tales of the mercenaries, the hired hands of the dark and gritty future Gibson envisioned. But about halfway through the volume was a story that followed an everyday man of the here and now, that managed to stick with me even more than the others. The Belonging Kind.

I won't give you a summary or anything. I will direct you to a copy of the script. It's a creepy one, all the way to the end. Go read.

What I find most interesting is the motherboard.vice article they site (and which says largely the same thing in more detail) Form that article;

"We are concerned about modern ocean acidification," she told me in an email. "Although the amount of carbon added to the atmosphere that triggered the mass extinction was probably greater than today's fossil fuel reserves, the rate at which the carbon was released was at a rate similar to modern emissions."

So in other words, the pH is dropping at a similar rate but Dr. Rachel Wood isn't telling us how much was actually produced or what the difference in the final quantity produced means in terms of the end result. Or the article left that out for whatever reason.

I woke up at 3am to go to the bathroom.

Turned on phone light.

Fell out of bed and spent rest of night on couch.

Praise be to short sighted twats that don't see beyond their life/term in office/business venture/whatever other short-term thing they have in front of their eyeballs.

Fundamentally we are all short sighted. Even if you're thinking in the long term scale of several hundreds of thousands of years, you're still just thinking about a blip in the universe's timescale.

Therefore yolo, and we should set every tree on planet earth on fire just to see what happens.
