"Nigger" was a semi-popular name for dark-colored pets and dogs in the 20s and 30s. For example, the commander of No. 617 Squadron RAF had a Labrador with that name, as seen in The Dam Busters.

Well, yeah, in modern context it's racist. And it was still racist back when such material was first released, but back then there were different standards and different social norms. Less politically correct and stuff.
