I'm also reading a big book of mid-20th century science fiction with forewords by Isaac Asimov.

Holy. Gods. Is it boring? It's BORING.

I started reading the first story, determined to finish. Got bored and flipped to the middle. I read one about a spaceman who got kidnapped by alliums and programmed to not have any emotions so he would be obedient for the purpose of transmitting other people's emotions back to the alliums via BRAAAAAAIN WAAAAAVES so what did he do? He went to his three ex-wives in turn. Bought the first one drugs and got her addicted again when she had just become rehabilitated and was happy and getting back on her feet, wrung the second one's spacepet's neck and dropped it on the floor in front of her, and kicked the third one's pregnant belly until he was sure the baby was going to miscarry. And the alliums were pleased by all the negative emotions they recorded so they could learn more about hoomans and brought him back and turned his emotions back on so he could feel the pain of what he had done then put him back on Earth again.

Me after reading: :I
Book after reading: *shut*

So it's Fantasy Bible?
The first half or so really reminded me of the bible actually.

Didn't finish either of the books though :P

Wait, were the stories by Asimov or just the forewords? Because I remember Asimov's stories being really neat.

So it's Fantasy Bible?
Pretty much. Not so much fantasy novel as it is fantasy worldbuilding.

People where I used to donate blood didn't like to be called vampires, so I started calling them leeches and their work bloodletting. I'm sure I'll get free acupuncture next time I show my face there...

Then you get cities like Paris where you should basically just kill yourself already.

You won’t have to think anymore: it’ll be just like having fun!

* Tiruin states that it is for your health--blood extraction must be done in order to detect probable minute 'problems' that may occur, or in the least know of your health status through your blood.

* Tiruin has experience. You can see the illnesses through those who suck out your blood :V
But seriously, it's for your own good! D: I know, I've a fear of blood and that REALLY messed up me doing venipuncture--though I'm still able to perfect it. Just...don't mind the needle, and trust the person handling it.

IT'S ALSO HARD FOR US, Y'KNOW X_X ...Well, at first. In training, before we do it to anyone in reality/field practice.
Those people who take your blood? They're the 'trained and tested/qualified' people. No worries. Just don't mind the needle and the pain. It's like a giant mosquito without the bad stuff and the annoying "buzzing", and the saliva.

Fuuuuuuuuuuck needles. Seriously. Fuck 'em. I know full well that it's for my own damn good, and that the person doing it is trained to do it, but god damn is that little piece of metal scary as all hell.

Silmarillion starts out like a mythological origin story (like the bible), and drags on pretty horribly at least until the destruction of the trees of light.  Then it picks up and becomes more of a history told through series of short stories.  Still painted in broader strokes than your typical entertainment reading, but focuses on explaining the lives of specific characters and major events in more enticing detail.  Just force your way through the beginning, and it's worth it.
