Well there's pain and there's poison to the point of fatal. Jack ants can be fatal in small numbers if I recall. I forget if Bullet ants are fatal or not.

I don't think they're fatal. There's a South American (I think) tribe that gets young men to wear a glove full of angry bullet ants because they're all masochists or something.

Les Stroud (aka Survivorman) met a few in the Amazon; when they tried to attack him, he cut one in half with a machete.

It continued to rage at him, still trying to bite.

Those guys are mean.

Anyway, their bite could easily knock out the unprepared person, which would leave them open to ambient dangers like scorpions and stuff.

Let me put it to you this way: There is a metric called the Schmit Insect Pain Scale, quite literally painstakingly compiled by Schmit, who let almost every biting and stinging insect in the world go at him so he could rate them accurately. The bullet ant is the only species which broke the scale, and is officially listed as an 11 out of 10 in overall pain.

Also, that tribe that requires the bullet ant gloves? They have to do it over a dozen times to be considered men, and are not allowed to marry or hold property until then. The guys from Jackass had a go at it, and as I recall, they only got Steve-O and one other to do it once. The other immediately threw off the gloves and Steve-O only lasted a minute or so. Considering the things Steve-O has done, you can imagine how bad it must be.

To be fair, 2000 of that is tuition, and 1000 of it is just kind of lost in the governmental ether so I might still have it.

But 2000 of that is transit.

And then I get to do it all over again next September! D:
