I haven't had any driving lessons in over half a decade. Neither the opportunity nor the desire to do so have made themselves apparent.
I haven't had driving lessons in 15 years. :P

I actually never got driving lessons. Took a 3 hour "defensive driving" course, and my dad gave me a 10 minute tutorial on how a clutch works before heading out. After that my sister and I learned to drive a stick together more or less, though she had already been driving an automatic.

There really isn't anything scary about driving. The vast majority of other drivers on the road are capable of avoiding an accident if you seriously mess up, and even obviously bad/dangerous drivers are actually usually competent (just dumb). Accidents largely result from distracted/intoxicated/impaired drivers, and more rarely from an unlucky combination of random variables when trying a spicy/dumb maneuver. Neither of those are things a new driver really has to worry about.

You can probably function without a driver's license, but as said, driving is freedom. The fear is largely unfounded, and it's a dumb thing to put off from laziness.

What is defensive driving and how is it applicable to daily life?
That sounds intriguing.

Defensive driving is basically not being a bad driver. Keeping safe following distances, signalling your turns properly, that sort of thing.

Oh. That seems more cautious than defensive.
I was imagining Vin Diesel showing you how to escape a car chase while causing the maximum amount of property damage.

That's more like offensive driving: the sort of thing that cops do to stop high-speed chases. PIT maneuvers and stuff.

I literally lack the concentration to focus on the gears, pedals, steering wheel, and anything outside the car, at the same time.

After you get comfortable in the vehicle and with how it works, driving really doesn't take all that much concentration. You mostly have to just watch the road ahead of you and be aware of your surroundings, the same way you watch your whole screen when you play video games. Most things, like pushing the gas pedal to go faster, become unconscious actions very quickly.
