Generally in that sense they are referring to unconscious and/or involuntary actions taken by the brain, outside of their direct control. This can conceivably be described as a separate consciousness from your own.

Yeah, I get what the meaning is supposed to be.  It's just one of those linguistic quirks that draws my attention every time I see it.

If I remember right Karl Pilkington once got really hung up and confused (and laughed at) over the fact that he couldn't put into words the idea of involuntary thoughts.

For future reference, if you ever put yourself at risk to a disease then you should probably look up the symptoms to that disease. I spent a week looking at this red patch on my knee thinking it was probably nothing. Turns out that's not necessarily true!
