Had a nasty waking nightmare early this morning. See, I was sleeping in my bunk while my trainer drove along a highway. At one point, I sorta woke up. It was nearly pitch-dark, the cabin was shaking and swaying a little, and for a horrifying moment I thought I had fallen asleep at the wheel. I sat up and began reaching desperately for the steering wheel, trying to find the brake pedal with my feet, clawing for the headlight switch because the darkness made me think that they had somehow gone out. Even once I woke up enough to realize that I wasn't actually in the driver's seat, the feelings persisted until I found the bunk's light switch and turned it on. Sleep didn't come easy after that.

Today I drove 44 miles, all on backstreets and A roads (no motorways) with my mother and sister in the back. I've only driven for 6 hours before this point. That was scary.

*pat pat* The first time I drove, beyond the driving test and maybe a couple trips to the corner store (<5 minute drive) was a three hour highway trip (Nearly 200 miles). Easy trip, actually, and I didn't have any problems at all.

Took a good hour or so for the shakes to stop, once I made it where I was going and turned the car off.

Driving gets easier and less terrifying the more you do it. Keep at it!

... though, as I said somewhere, sometimes not the latter! Or, at least, it doesn't necessarily stop being terrifying. I'm still as terrified of driving as I was when I started... several years back, now. Just more inured to the terror, and generally less nerve wracked by the end of a trip. Generally.

It definitely gets easier and less likely to kill others/yourself as you get more practice in, though. Which is good!

Yeah, driving in general doesn't scare me anymore. Which isn't to say I drive like crazy or endanger other people! It's a little like handling a gun, I guess: can potentially be deadly, but if you are safe, respectful, and responsible the risks are greatly diminished.

:/ I got into quite a few accidents learning to drive, and now I really really dislike driving. To the point where it's a bit of a self fulfilling thing, since I hate driving so much that I don't drive often so that I don't stay in practice so I am bad so I don't like driving.

I blame genetics. My dad used to be a terrible driver, although it's hilarious to hear his stories nowadays about that. Lucky for him my grandfather owned a car, like, dealership.

If you have good habits and stay alert to other driver's behavior, it's quite safe.  It's stressful at first, because there's a lot of stuff to get familiar with and mistakes can be really dangerous.  Trying to concentrate on handling, protocol, and reading the traffic around you is overwhelming... but once you get comfortable with those things, it becomes about the same as eating or taking a shower -- two other things that tons of people die doing every day, even though they're simple, routine things.  Shit happens.  But if you're not reckless, it's unlikely.
