This is probably the largest reason I have for not liking things, I undermine it with the thought of getting acclimated, or somehow dependent on it for some reason. Plasticity can be scary in some cases.

Interestingly enough, that fungus (Cordiceps) that infects the ants actually has an extract usable in sports to increase performance. :P

Well the variant that infects a species of caterpillar is more often used as a herbal medicine. The stringy growths that come from ant species are generally not thought of as being as useful.

While we're on the subject of parasitic growths that alter your mind in various unpleasant ways...

Read or listen to Infected by Scott Sigler. It's really good.

The spider is nothing compared to the fungus. I... I think I have a phobia of parasitic fungi. Seriously, the notion just terrifies me.

Who doesn't have that reaction? No-one wants to be the guy who's being taken over by a hostile parasite.
'If I was an imitation - a perfect imitation - how would you know it was me?'
And now Xantalos has given us the perfect gift of imagining hostile fungi taking over your brain and attempting to use you as a way to spread it around. That might be a good idea for a SCP, actually...
I've actually read a Creepypasta about that. Slept with all the lights on, even though the story took place during the day.

I've done hardcore drugs. Dopamine release is something you can resist becoming acclimated to, if you have the willpower. If you knew that you had some sort of parasite trying to control your behavior, your OUTRIGHT HORROR would probably keep you from allowing it to do so. And also, doctors.

What if the parasites/drugs made you paranoid and you didn't trust doctors to begin with?

Don't tell anyone that you can see their shadows. If they hear you telling anyone, if you let them know that you know of them, they will get you.

Considering what such a symbiosis would have theoretically achieved whilst insane people tend to go the other end of progress, I for one wouldn't mind.

Though of course in any case if I were infected I wouldn't mind at all...

Just a thought, assuming a fungi were to grow inside your brain it would have trouble getting through your skull to grow spires and spread spores, so somebody infected with a cordycep specialised for homosapien would have these strange tendrils growing from their eyes, nose and ears.

Just thought I would leave you with that.

So the lesson here is don't trust those with hair coming out of their orifices.
