So like, i just saw an episode of Doctor Who. Great series, very entertaining. However, this episode contained something that was right the fuck out of my nightmares. "The Beast Below", i think it was called, the one with the space whale and those dreadful smilers. In particular, it was the latter, because the notion of space whales is funny and awesome. That default "SMILE" they wear is really creepy in and of itself, a crowning example of the uncanny Grand Canyon. Then they spin their heads around, and reveal a frown, which is actually less creepy than the smile, but still unnerving. Then they spin their head a third time, where one would expect the creepy smile to appear again, because their heads only have two sides. Instead, a downright horrifying almost-demonic face of rage appears, combining both red eyes of doom (COMPLETELY red), uncanny valley and nightmare face into one exceptionally pants-wetting package. The first scene in which it appears does absolutely nothing to mitigate the horror either. The fact that my imagination keeps expecting that face to pop up everywhere doesn't exactly help either.

In other words, they managed to combine three of my phobias (uncanny valley, nightmare face and anomalous machine behaviour (this last one kind of makes me wonder if i'm sane or not, but i'm too busy soiling myself to care because it's pretty major)) into one thing and scene, all of them falling under the "IT SHOULD NOT BE/LOOK LIKE THAT" category. That probably makes absolutely no sense to you whatsoever, but hey, it does to me. In fact, it's the worst category of phobias in my noggin.

I can relate to the anomalous machine behavior thing.  I always have strange thoughts about, for instance, whether my tv or computer are doing things they shouldn't whenever I leave them on unattended, or if I'm alone and feeling creeped out for whatever reason, I'll get paranoid that something is going to take control of them and communicate with me.  I've also had problems for a long time with kid's electronic toys activating themselves around me and moving or making noise completely unexpectedly.  Toys that speak especially have a tendency to do this and recite lines (ones they're designed to say) that are disturbingly relevant for that given moment.  The worst was this plastic Elmo thing whose jaw was hinged and he would speak a short line whenever his mouth was opened.  They used to like to play with it in the car.  Whenever the kids weren't in the car with us, that Elmo would just be rolling around on the floor, and would always do so at the creepiest times (like laughing if we just made a joke or revealed unfortunate news or something).  Sometimes it would do this when the car wasn't even moving.  We got so used to it that whenever this kind of thing happens, my wife and I will both exclaim "Shut up Elmo!!"

I think this whole thing started, for me, when I was like 10 or 11 and we had this tv that I could always see straight across from my bedroom door when I was lying in bed at night.  This TV had a tendency to randomly turn itself on... but only at night and only when I was trying to go to sleep.  Always creeped me out, and I think it may have left an imprint on me.

Well then, there goes my sleep tonight. :P
It's somewhat reassuring to hear that i'm not alone with this fear, but in some odd way, it's also frightening for that exact reason. The fact that my bedroom is full of old toys and has a PC monitor glaring right at me from bed probably helps that along, though. I've lost count over how many times i've been fearing that some horrifying face might suddenly appear on that or this (laptop) monitor for no reason, yet it never fails to scare the shit out of me despite it never happening. For that reason, i instinctively sleep while facing the wall, because at least i know a wall doesn't have the capability of suddenly spawning anything. That is, until a spider crawls in front of me while i try to sleep.

POST SCRIPTUM: moderately arachnophobic and self-declared hyperactive imagination, none of this lends itself particularly well to being a stereotypical fearless manly man. Once dreamt that a big fucking spider crawled out in front of my face while i was sleeping, and i INSTANTLY jumped out of my bed. Only after a few seconds did i realize that the lights were in fact off, and that it would be entirely impossible to spot a spider. Therefore, sleepy logic says "i did not see it so it is not there", which was fortunate.

I have these weird moments when I walk around inside my living room at night. It makes me feel like I'm being watched, and makes me want to turn on the nearest light. Creepy shit.

Other than that, there was one time where I had the most fucking vivid nightmare ever. The muppets killed my entire family and detonated an atomic bomb inside my house. I was like wtf.

On a seperate note, does anyone have nightmares when they're sick?
It always starts normal.
Then, there's this low, persistent buzzing noise. You start to try and find it while you're dreaming, but you can't.
Then the dream slowly zooms out.
slowly.
Until the dream is a small white dot in the center of my vision.
Then the noise explodes. Every whisper is amplified to extreme levels. I can barely think for all the noise.
It keeps going.
And never stops.

Try having dreams which you can't wake up out of unless you complete 'it's' goal. I had one dream where I had to defeat the 7 deadly sins personified (sorta similar to the homunculii of FMA, except, more real-world representations). Fortunately, I remembered my override codes, pulled up a console, and disconnected from the dream and woke myself up.

Needless to say, I only killed 5 of 7 of them, but more with clever methods that even I would have to applaud my creativity with. Of course, it wasn't exactly G-rated dreaming, considering the violence, but if any spirits tried messing with my head, joke's on them, I know how it works. I mean, they're dealing with somebody that turned his head into a psychic stronghold, complete with a Freak-a-Zone safehouse, overstocked with bacon and old classic reruns. I even have a personal Hell for all my inner demons which I tamed to let loose on "Freddies" or dream demons that want to pull crap like stated above; or mess with my thinking or knock me into an inexplicable depression, or try to harm me between states of consciousness. Screw that. I AM Fear. I fight back with nonsense and my own clowns.

I used to have these crazy dreams. In the only one I remember I was in a race, we where racing for a while then I went snooping around another racers car. Then, somehow, it dawned on me that they where nuclear powered. For some reason this scared the shit out of me. Not the kind of scared where you want to scream or run away, and not the kind that makes you want to hide. It was the kind of complete, overwhelming terror that makes you just give up. And that is what I did every time in the dream, I just sat there as an immense wave of despair crashed over me. That was when I woke up. I never actually woke up fully though, almost every time I would stumble to my parents room and mumble to them about how I "didn't have enough points to save grandma." They wouldn't understand and I would get extremely upset. It wasn't sleep-walking, I was completely conscious, but for some reason I got caught at the edge of my dream.
My childhood was (or, is) weird.

Lucidly lucid dreams...

On a related note, I coughed up some phlegm with blood in it.

That's not terrifying at all :D

@SalmonGod's post about stuff acting creepily:

TV... turning on by itself? D-did a ghost press the buttons?

I absolutely hate stuff doing things like that. There was this time I was absolutely creeped out by a robotic sound emanating fron somewhere in the room. Turned out to be just an alarm, but the sound was downright creepy. Couldn't sleep that night.

And I hate my TV. Not for turning itself on or something, which it never has done yet. I hate it because it is so reflective, and when I look at reflective surfaces when it's midnight, I feel like someone other than me is watching me, which totally chills me to the bone.

So I was lying on my bed last night playing with a small spider that was crawling around my hand* and reading the Coat of Arms SCP when I hear something step on the gravel outside my window.
There is no gravel outside my window.
...

*No, really.
