It amazes me how the addition of music can change a game from "Awesome, if a little dated" to "incredibly terrifying".

Having always played Quake without the music, I didn't really get what people were on about. But then I finally found out a way to mount an image of the music CD while playing an emulated version, such as the Steam release or the downloadable shareware version.

I never realized that music could be threatening. Just the tiniest little bass thrum can change the entire mood of the game. It changes the game from "pop-scare, blood-n-guts" scary to actually rather disquieting and nerve-wracking.

However much id Software paid Trent Reznor for the music, it was money well-spent.

You have inspired me to write two riffs for bass, drums and claps in SunVox. Both of which I rather like.

On the whole music thing, just look at a game like Bastion or Transistor.  The music is the main reason I bought Transistor after buying Bastion on a whim and just being blown away.

Great music can accentuate a game into being amazing if the game-play itself is sort of mediocre.

Also Amnesia. Music and ambiance play a huge role in actually making the game scary.

Damn. Regarding videogame music, I found something that belongs more in the Happy Thread: the reboot of Unreal Tournament will feature the original's composers, including Alexander Brandon. AKA the guy who also did Deus Ex's and Jazz Jackrabbit 2's soundtracks, AKA Motierre and Ancano's VA in Skyrim (what do you know?).
