Some are just completely insane sounding, though.
...Can't tell if zerglings gargling broken glass, or demons trying to whistle through orifices they shouldn't have. Either way, that's...pretty whacky.
Definitely the zerglings.
Yeah, that's it.

I'm left wondering if it was broadcast anything like that, or if it is the result of heavy distortion. Having waves bouncing off the atmosphere is bound to cause some alterations in sound, right?

The solar winds bouncing off the planet is the sound. Otherwise you're just listening to the solar wind.

It's not really a "sound" anyway. It's radio waves and other forms of electromagnetic radiation being converted into sound.

Any alterations would be regular ol' corruption, which is just extra static.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Hey Jude in minor key. (Warning: Depression condensed into musical form.)

The world is desensitized to violence. Can you be numbed out of humanity? I suppose that's the most terrifying thing of all.

I don't think desensitization is necessarily a bad thing.  All it implies is that you're no longer shocked by it, which to me indicates a greater ability to act rationally when faced with it.  I also don't see what it has to do with a person's humanity.

Were I to need surgery, I would want a surgeon who is desensitized to the sight of blood.  I wouldn't expect that surgeon to enjoy the sight of blood or seek to cause people to bleed more than anyone else.  I'd only expect them to be more capable of performing the surgery.

Nor would I want any life threatening surgery to be performed with someone whose empathy has all but diminished into nothingness.

I think it's actually an important distinction.  It's directly relevant to all the major controversies about the effects of media on culture and behavior.

Nor would I want any life threatening surgery to be performed with someone whose empathy has all but diminished into nothingness.

That's exactly the connection I'm challenging.  I can understand it's commonly believed that this connection exists, but I think it's a crossing of unrelated ideas.

Desensitization implies only that the natural reaction by any person with empathy to be shocked when faced with the endangerment or suffering another has been worn away.

It's also understood that someone without empathy has no reason to be shocked by the danger or suffering of another.

But it is logical fallacy to take these two separate ideas and turn them into the belief that lack of shock is the same as lack of empathy.
