I just had a scary thought.  What if there was a cyber terrorism group that made mods for videogames under hundreds of diffrent aliases, and installed various bits of malware in every one, everything from dataminers to remote controllers.  Just bits and pieces that referenced eachother to complete their code so that no single one can be identified by an antivirus and with enough mods with enough copies that surely all the pieces could be found on a single system.  Once they know where a steam folder or GoG folder is after all they can basically figure out where any other potential bits of their code would be, and all they would need for that is just a single GoG or steam mod with their code on the system to identify the directory.

They could all just be waiting, silent for some code to activate, just a single steam workshop update that causes the whole system to spring into action, search for as many parts of it's code as it can find in your mod folders, and then every avid gamer's computer has bowed to the will of some malicious entity bent on world domination.

To lower the chances of something like this happening: don't run your games as administrator unless you really, really need to, and get an antivirus with a behaviour tracker. Oh, and try to limit your mod use, especially ones from disreputable or inexperienced creators, not even because of the threat of malware, but because poorly-made code risks your system stability and causes crashes and other unexpected side effects.
