But have you considered cryonic vitrification?

The slim possibility that one's consciousness could survive a future revival of the brain at least mitigates some of the existential terror of being an atheist.
Of course you can't live forever, regardless, but it buys more time to experience stuff.

I mean, what's the legal status of a 200 year old brain-jar actually going to be like? Especially if you didn't have an impressive job in your real life. e.g. if they've got you, the janitor at the local school who managed to scrape enough money together for cryo, next to computer scientist Hal Finney, who are they going to want to defrost? And are they going to risk defrosting Hal Finney's brain, before running all sorts of tests on slices of not-Hal-Finney's brain?

There are still ethical standards in play. Even disregarding that, the horror is finite. I'm not sure they're going to torture you for 100+ years just for laughs.

(Also, I personally wouldn't go the brain in the jar route. Not having a body is an extra complication for revival. Endocrine system is kind of important to mental health.)

There is a physical difference though, in that right now, my brain can control the rest of my body and receive inputs, and it can't do much of anything in a glass jar
