Just started reading more of the author's work. I already think it's going to be just as great.
What is it you kids call horror stories these days? Creepy pasta? Well I'm gonna get fat off the stuff at this rate. Cheese-smothered lasagna.

I only wish the guy had his stories in print. Reading on a screen just ain't the same.

For me, personally, the main reason it was quite shocking/emotional was because it seemed like a somewhat grown-up version of the Goosebumps novels I loved as a kid. Otherwise I think I've become a bit desensitized to such awful themes, thanks to certain (very good, but very out-there) pieces of media.

I found that kind of creepy, but not actually terrifying. Does that make me a terrible person? Also the author kept using the wrong words. 'Insulate' has never meant the same thing as 'insinuate', and never will.

Eh. It's not so much the tone (I didn't like that) as the subtle details. And to be honest it all seems pretty unlikely anyway. You could do a TL;DR, but it'd be very, very information-dense.

The first 95% is just establishing character and ominous atmosphere and traditions in regards to a spooky tree and mysterious grinding metal sounds in the distance. The final 5% of importance involve the spooky tree and mysterious sounds coming back later in the protagonist's adolescence (a few years after first going to spooky tree without incidence) with a sort of horror moment not induced by any physical description of any spookiness, just the mental realization that

His sister went into the spooky tree without following the traditions (which keep you safe) and got snatched by the "skinned men," the grinding metal is her dying - and he hears her dying in the distance

the women at the mine aren't infertile? I get that the Prescott and the sheriff were living off bottled water and canned food to avoid whatever's in the water, but the women there had still been taking in that stuff for years.

AFAIK it doesn't. It was something I was thinking of earlier.

Most of the women are not from around there, so presumably they wouldn't have been poisoned. As for the ones who were from the town - if they turned out to be infertile, I guess they met the Shining Man.

1. I don't get what the author means with the formulation of "And the Prescott’s had to offer triple the price for girls". Triple price, to who? The traffickers? The townies? Why "had to"? It's bugging me because it feels significant because of the whole Tom-Tom event at the hospice, but I can't get a clear idea of what the author is trying to convey.

2. What was the significance of the powder?

2. The powder represents the deaths, probably. That was another thing I didn't really like about the story - that seems forced, to make it sound like a drug operation, because the deaths aren't really the worst thing there.

1. To the townies, definitely. Had to because people were more hesitant to sell their family away if they're going to be raped and impregnated for the purpose of selling to human traffickers rather than to the good townspeople.

2. The powder was the output of the Shiny Gentleman. Pretty sure anyway.
