Fun fact: Finland, the country I live in, rounds every checkout price to the nearest 5 cents, if cash is used. In the long run, both the buyer and seller break even on occasionally paying more or less money, and nobody needs to bother with 1 or 2 cent coins.

Does anybody even actually use their minimum denomination coins to pay? Whenever I travel, they (of whichever local currency) just become souvenirs for me.

We have the same thing. I don't actually know how the situation works legally, since one and two cent coins are no longer actually legal tender here, but prices are almost always RX,99.

I use them constantly, mostly by rolling them up into coin rolls at the end of the month when money's tight and I need toilet paper. Literally everyone I know either does that or simply makes a regular trip to the bank to deposit their penny hoard.

Obviously, you must always buy 5 pieces of the product! It doesn't matter if you're buying a lifetime supply of canned camel and alpaca cheese fondue, go buy it for 4 friends too, or GO TO JAIL, YOU CRIMINAL SCUMBAG!

i tend to just keep them in a dedicated box for months and then when it's full take it to a store during rush hours in a clear plastic bag vOv

i get to overstate the bag's value slightly (although counting them is a bitch) since it happens so rarely

You are a terrible, terrible person. @_@

@Arx: The official reason for x.99 prices was that back in the day, it was like that so the cashier had to open the register to get change and thus couldn't just pocket the money the person gave them for product they were buying without it being on record.

The reason why it's likely still that way even though we have scanners and stuff is to psychologically lure more people into buying stuff. 7.99 on instinct looks significantly cheaper than 8.00 even though for all intents and purposes they're the same price. The first number is the thing that we pay the most attention to.

That implies you fail to condition yourself to read the entire label. Always read the entire string. Always account for sales tax. It should become habit. Don't fail yourself.

Firstly, don't take implications about me from what I say. Did I mention that I, personally, had issues with it? Please, quote the line. I'll wait.

Secondly, if it works on one person out of a hundred, or a thousand, that's still one extra sale. It's not a case of objective reality, it just makes it "feel" cheaper and thus more appealing.

I'm Australian. Tax or whatever is included in the price.

I didn't mean to come after you personally at all, man. Sorry...

Ah, sorry on my part as well. I'm not in the most cheerful of moods so I overreacted. What you said was fine, I just took it the wrong way.
