That was weird.

Anyway, tea is delicious.

Relevant both to tea derail and thread title:

Once, I was staying after school with some friends to do a project. The teacher who's room we're using has a tea kettle and some tea. So we decide to have tea, because fuck yeah tea. I have cup of tea, sip tea, tea is bitter. I go look in the cupboards for some sugar or honey or something. Find some sugar. Shake some sugar into tea from the holes in the top of the container. Stir besugared tea vigorously. Drink tea. Realize container of sugar was actually a saltshaker.

... lots of people? It's pretty common (or at least not unknown in my area, in any case) in the states, anyway, and it's not like it's a bad idea. Consistency's roughly the same as salt, so it's a pretty good way to distribute sugar.

Keeping sugar in a shaker is unheard of 'round here, too.

It's very rare for most people to need to sprinkle sugar on something, in my experience. Generally, anything you're putting sugar in requires fairly precise measurements, works as well or better going in as a lump, or both. For things like that, the old bag-and-spoon works perfectly well, with a measuring spoon as needed.

... man, most of my actual uses of plain sugar have involved salt-like applications of it. If sugar's being measured, it's brown sugar. Otherwise the sweet-additive is... something not plain sugar. And lumps of sugar basically don't exist where I'm at. I mean, technically they're in stores (sugar cubes, etc.), but they're very rarely used, in practice.

You can do the spoon thing, too, but a shaker works better in a lot of cases. S'usually those restaurant shakers (y'know the ones, fairly sizable, cylindrical, has the kinda' square-ish flap over a circular hole...) , but they put salt in those occasionally, too.

Yeah, I love rooibos too. And now that you mention it, one person from my workplace thought I was referring to rooibos when I was talking about pu erh.

In our supermarkets at least pu-erh is usually labelled as red tea. Rooibos as rooibos, or "rooibos tea". (until recently, btw, it was hard to find pure, unflavored rooibos, let alone loose rooibos bags. This made me very sad)

Rooibos is, in my not very humble opinion, the worst thing to come out of my country.

Okay, maybe not the worst, but I can't stand the stuff. I used to like it, but now it just makes me seriously nauseous.

So you use sugar like we use grated cheese? That is, sprinkled on everything?

I've never seen a person keep sugar in a shaker, but you see it in restaurants all the time. They look something like this usually:

Pretty sure that 99% of the time they are used for coffee. I don't think I've ever seen someone just pour sugar onto food.

What kind of sugar do you guys have that looks like salt?

Sugar grains are like ten times the size.

What kind of sugar do you have where the grains are bigger than that of salt?
