KoSS was talking about "The Necronomicon: The Best Weird Fictions of H.P Lovecraft" which is a compilation of the best of Lovecraft's tales. Sadly, this means there is none of August Derleth's tales, and Lovecraft's tales are terrible.

But really though, his lore is great, but the writing itself is kind of painful to read. It's like reading Tolkien if Tolkien is xenophobic and writes more about cosmic horror and evil black men instead of elves doing the nasty.

I found that while the stories are imaginative, they rely a lot on the fear of the unknown that existed more when they were written. Not many major things on Earth are unknown now so the imagination has a harder time buying into it.

Yeah, Lovecraft, even from the short amount I've read of his work so far, is kind of a rascist asshole. Don't particularly mind the writing style, personally, but whatever.

Meh. I never got a big offensively racist vibe from any of Lovecraft's short stories. Some unusual politically-incorrect phrases, yeah, but not anything different from Huckleberry Finn's regular use of the n-word or the really racy stereotypical caricatures portrayed in old cartoons. Times were different, take it with a grain of salt, etc.

It's not like he was writing blatantly anti-semite nazi propaganda or something.

Yeah, that made me WTF pretty hard. Who names their cat that? And he describes people as "mongrels" or similar many times. Although that might be somewhat justified, seeing as most of the people described as such are descended/corrupted from/by eldritch horrors.

Rats in walls, yes. Literal hell, no. Figurative hell maybe. Good short story. Probably one of my favorites from Lovecraft.
