On the upside however it does, in the short term, give us an unprecedented opportunity to mock and deride  all of the cold-war era talking heads who treated communism vs capitalism as a meaningful issue. Russia has been capitalist for twenty three years and we're still at odds with them. Capitalism doesn't fucking matter.

On the other hand, the vast majority of Russia's current social and economic problems are residual fallout from the mess communism left behind.

I'd say that Yeltsin's horrible clusterfuck of a transition in the 90's was much worse for Russia than communism.

I'd say that Yeltsin's horrible clusterfuck of a transition in the 90's was much worse for Russia than communism.

That didn't help, but the horrible infrastructure, swollen black market that was needed for basic necessities due to the failure of the government to manage the economy properly, and the massive ecological disaster predate the transition by quite a bit.
