Deus Ex Machina much?
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:13:36 pm »

I decided adventure mode was not hardcore enough for me, so I decided to increase difficulty a bit.

First, I increased megabeast/nightbeast/demon numbers to the very top. Then I changed the temperature range to -200/0, so that, on the polar regions of the world, people would die just from being outside. Mind you, this world is so difficult that all of my fortress died on the first year, due to incessant ogre/megabeast attacks, and also once I left all the booze outside, then the barrels disintegrated from the cold. It was not pretty.

Anyways, I started as a demigod crossbowman. My first quest was to kill the groom of a night troll, or something like that. I entered the creature's lair, in the middle of a terrifying tundra. I had thirty bolts and five carving knives I had found on the floor. The beast faced me: a large eyeless humanoid that stamped the ground. I fired at it, but only hit the arms. I ran away, and it ran after me. Every few steps, I'd stop to shoot it a few times, but despite having both lungs and the throat punctured, the beast seemed not to slow down. I had ran out of bolts, so I started throwing everything I had at it, until I had only a single carving knife left. The beast seemed unphased, so I just shrugged and sat there, waiting for my death.

Then all of a sudden, a lion popped out of nowhere and bit the thing's arms off. Whut.

I just stood there and watched while the lion litterally ripped the monster apart. When it had finished, there were body parts scattered all around over 10 tiles away from the monster's body. Then it turned to attack me. I realized that this time it really was the end, but I might as well fight a bit. So I grabbed the carving knife, aimed at Ultratoe (the lion had been named after killing the monster) and threw it. With no throwing skill whatsoever.

I hit it straight in the lower body, and the lion's guts exploded all over the place. It crawled two more squares in my direction, and died. At that moment, I had to stop playing DF and go drink something. I decided that my crossbowman was probably the most awesome guy ever, and that we would battle together for years and years to come.

Two in-game days later, a demon kicked my skull through my brain.  ::)

At least you died to a demon.

I woke up to a kobold's bolt in my brain.

At least you died to a Kobold bolt. I survived running away from the bogeymen, into a mountain goat purely by accident, and in one turn of accidental combat with the thing, was struck down by a random *the mountain goat kicks you in the head with his left hoof...
blah blah blah
...jamming the skull through the brain.
You have been struck down*

Yeah that sucks a bit. This guy who died to the kobold bolt was such an accomplished thrower that he could decapitate people with their own vomit from 10 tiles away. Once in a fight with an archer he ripped the arrow from his own leg, hurled it back at the elf and struck him through the eye... then ripped the OTHER arrow from his chest and threw it at the swordsman hitting him in the throat.

How did it hit you with a bolt when you were asleep? Did it grab the bolt and stab with it?

Deus ex machina's works both ways...and seeing as this is Df, mostly against you. What happened to him was one of those times that the game just feels like throwing you a bone that's not aimed at your head.

NPCs can hit you just fine while unconscious as if you're just prone...kinda like how they can fire at you from afar/ in different z-levels when most of the time you can't even tell where they are....damn snipers *shakes fist*

But I thought projectiles couldn't hit a target even if they are just prone/crouching.

I had something even funnier happen once; I had to rush out from cover to take out a bandit leader who was also an expert crossbow user.  When I jumped out from behind the tree, I saw a groundhog had latched onto his leg (or something) and he was distracted wrestling with it.  Didn't take me long to finish this joker off...

It was a nasty shock the first time I discovered that a bowman with one hand will try to stab you with their bow, and if you chop both their hands off and have them bleeding and in serious pain on the ground they can still leap into the air with a gravity-defying kick and cave your skull in.

those deaths are really bad sometimes. survived like 60 + kills, master dodger. eventually ended by a small bandit boss, after i had easily waltzed through his camp, one-hitting everything. lopped off both his limbs, he kicked me in the head and i died. i raged.

I wandered bleary-eyed into a keep, desperate to sleep away the night, only to be confronted (and immediately destroyed) by a goblin crossbowman
