What are the best ways to train speed?

What is the max speed for a vanilla adventurer?

Can fat characters lose weight?

1: Train agility, I think dodging helps.
2: Not sure.
3: Fire, If you can survive fat melting you become fireproof.

Speed is primarily determined by agility; your max agility attribute is double your base, unmodified agility. This is itself affected by the base speed of the creature you're playing as (so elves are much faster overall, regardless of agility). There's some outdated research on the wiki which may help you get an idea as to how speed works out.

1.) http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=70969.0

2.) There are lots of factors like their race, build, starting stats ,etc....

3.) Yes. the most effective way is through burning it off... literally. Not safe, but quite effective.

Superelvenly Agile with no gear gives you about 2000 speed

Honestly I am not sure that the agility= speed equation works very well anymore.  I just found that my heros that have superior strength are often more likely to have very high speed than those with superior agility, at the start of the game.  Does this have to do with body size, so that a bigger person has a longer stride?  Perhaps I need to report this as a bug or something?

In case you were wondering, these characters were _not_ loaded down with armor... they were part of the loincloth challenge, so they were all but naked at the beginning of the game.  :)

Toady has mentioned disentangling speed from every single action, so it could be part of that effort.  It's such a fundamentally helpful stat that it's sensible that any physical attribute would contribute to it, though it is odd that agility is providing less of a bonus than strength.
