if you learn a secret can you write it down so others can learn it?
Write manuals and the secret may show up.

This would be a neat way to provide your future adventurers in that world with easily-accessible copies of the secrets of life and death.

Is there a way to either hack or learn appraisal skill in adventure mode without raising every other skill?

You can also do that to provide such books to player fortresses, to turn the inhabitants into necromancers (as illustrated in Kruggsmash's latest two episodes.)

How to make my companions follow me in water to cross a river? They either stand on the shore or run away in random direction.

Basically no do. They jump into if you're fighting in water though, pathfinding seems to be different when in conflict. You can also try jump-slamming them in water (doesn't start a fight) or make them dodge into the water by jumping on them.

If you just want to cross the river though, you just have to walk away from water far enough to fast travel and they'll be still with you when you're out of fast travel again. Just keep track of their distance to you when going away from river (brown direction by companion's name = close to separation)

How exactly do I hire people to "work" at my camp? I asked a dude to be my heart-person, he accepted, but that was about it.

Do I have to get him in my party, drag him back to the camp then cancel the agreement?

playing 43.05 btw

Only companions can work on camps. When you are finished planning your camp, you can specify which people you want to work on it and for how long.

Oh, but how do I do that? I can only assign people to zones as far as I can find for myself, and unless I cancel the agreement they just keep following me..

They can catch up with you much later. Maybe they use the caverns.

What do Mummy curses even do? Only time I ever went into a Tomb the thing never attacked me, even when I tried to. The wiki doesn't say any specifics about curses either.

Specifically, it reduces all one-fifth of your skill rolls to 0. Permanently.

It makes any skill roll fail with a 20% chance, ignoring skill levels.
