If you put on an alpaca wool shirt, then a pigtail robe, the shirt is listed as your armor. And the shirt is the undermost/innermost item. Neither has armor tags, tho.

I used to have a gambeson-like item that has the same armor lvl as mail, but with higher layer size and coverage. It would show up as armor worn if they were of the same layer (both as OVER) and the gambeson was put on first. Otherwise, it was the innermost item which was the mail shirt.

It was just very odd.

Is there a better way to find a night creature's lair than to play Where's Waldo blindfolded?

Obviously asking the locals is the expected step. When in doubt, find the local lord. If they know about other types of beasts, or bandits or whatever, but not what you're hunting? That's USUALLY a good sign that the area around that town isn't infested with them.

Tavern keepers always know shit, if you find one that doesn't then they'll probably point across the room at a soldier in there who will.

The thing is that I'm looking for a night creature I haven't been assigned to kill, nor heard the name of. I'm inferring its existence by the fact that I've killed 3 of its brides in the same general area in a short span of time.

Strange. Unless they've outlived their source creature, I can only recall seeing night creature spouses in the same lair as their source. I assume you've only been intercepting wandering spouses, and haven't yet found the lair?

If there's a town near that area you've been hunting, it's definitely worth finding the most knowledgeable person you can there and probing them for info on ALL the beasts they know about. Eventually you should get hints about lairs in that area.

Besides, exhausting the locals of all their trouble knowledge is smart if you don't want any nasty surprises.

Recently I've had a problem with trolls running around the countryside instead of being in lairs, might be what you're experiencing.

I've found that they often ambush me after a bit of looking in the general area, and usually while traveling through the rural outskirts of villages. It's happened three or four times.

That's how night trolls and creatures with LARGE_PREDATOR act right now - they wander out for a while and can be seen as blips on the map (night trolls are invisible though, I think - you need to be ambushed by them). Every once in a while they go back to their lairs though.

A fun way to track night trolls is have tracking set to on. You can do this in fast travel mode. When the direction of tracks ends, drop into slow travel. Here you should have odor set to on as well. Once the smell of bug innards comes up you can opt to stay in slow travel and track until the trail runs cold. Alternate between fast and slow travel in the same way you might use to find a known lair at night, but here you're looking for that roaming asterisk. If you think you're in the area and are in fast travel, you can also strip the area line by line. As not everything can be found by asking directions to, the manual method can be pretty useful.

You can definitely see night trolls on the map.

Not always. It seems like possibly the only traveling hazard that isn't reliably spotted until it ambushes you. You instead have to hope for that tracking via scent and trails, sniff out either "bug innards" or "cooked flesh" as I've encountered night trolls smelling like either.

Now if only camping NPCs could generate the same smell message to represent cooking, just to give the player a cat scare. :V

Oh, had no idea that happened now.

Strange, I saw nothing on the map before the actual ambush. Maybe I just wasn't looking for anything in particular. And despite my character's apparently high tracking skill I never use it, so yeah.

If they aren't traveling around and then start to near you, but I've never had one ambush me which wasn't visible on the travel map. Maybe it's due to always having observation/intuition up?

I always find night trolls out of lair by waterways. Never been ambushed by one. At the beginning of runs my character has avg intuition and zero observer. But then, I avoid static asterisks.

I blundered into one earlier today when crossing a river in the middle of the day. Never saw an asterisk, had tracking on, as soon as I dropped out of fast travel I got a line of tracks along hte water. This was an outsider with high observer and probably at least +3 tracking. It was close enough and sneaking for sure, caught up and spotted it in about 30 tiles. I think they just don't ambush if you con red or whatever.
