how does one handle boogeymen? My lasher's companion died and the next night she was killed by them. She had a pretty high dodge, agility, and lashing skill.

I remember killing them in the past but that was not possible.

Do I just run for eternity or what?

@smeeprocket see below.

Have you tried the multi-attack tactic ?
It's so overpowered against the AI that i think it's most likely an exploit more than anything.

- press the , key to wait for the enemy to be in contact
- press SHIFT+A to aim an attack
- press a to Strike
- select the bodypart you want to hit
- press z to enable "multiattack"
- select the type of attack you want to use (slash/stab/etc..)
- press SHIFT+A to aim a 2nd attack (thanks to multiattack)
- select the Dodge option instead of an actual attack
- Dodge in the direction you want
- Press . to launch the multiattack (the attack then the dodging)

With this technique i managed to survive a 3 bogeymen attack with a beginning demigod adventurer (that usually get killed fast by bogeymen) and striking them down, it takes a lot of patience as , wait only for a tick and you are going to miss most of your attacks, but in the end damage on yourself will be minimal (assuming of course you have good armor pieces, make sure to get some from castles before going out) and the enemy should be dead

This takes more time than time as you can see.

They were hard in 34.11, and are harder now.

They are so fast and agile they can get several attacks in before a moderately encumbered adventurer gets a chance to move, dont fatigue, and dont feel pain.  It also appears there can be about 6-8 of them in any location (in 34.11 Ive seen from 4-6, rarely more), and they teleport and respawn to intersect with your pathing should you get away somehow.  Some can spawn with horns (i.e. very dangerous) and they come when you sleep or when you are awake (unlike 34.11 when you could sometimes just stay awake all night in local travel mode).

They are a mess.  They can climb trees if they have grasping parts and require better than competent skills (lvl3) to even consider taking on 1v1, let alone 1-6. In 34.11, you could do various things, and Ill list what I have noticed carries over.

-Beaches and mountains (i.e. the peaks).  Boogeys dont spawn there, so you are safe from them (but not other ambushes).

-Sneak-sleeping.  I did some work, and found out that sleeping while sneaking mildly raised the chance of them not spawning.  They dont have to spawn every night.

-Cheating.  Mod them out, advance worldgen can determine how many types of 'numberless' boogies spawn, and  dfhack has commands to kill any given race.

-Fires.  you usually cant light fires in sight of a hostile, but if you surround yourself with them or otherwise make a maze you can wait them out or toss stuff at them from the middle.  Mind trees and bushes, which are uncontrolled fires and can melt you, and remember that pebbles are infinite on tiles they are present on, so you could spend the night knapping and tossing rocks at them for xps.  Critters (and you) cannot path over fire, but if you somehow get on it (i.e. dodging or falling or careful moving) you are allowed to move off of it.

-Charging.  Charge attacks will always knock them over, because they have so little mass.  Theories include them being the size of toads (most popular) or them being made of shadows (my theory), but they have a small bodysize.  Bodysize dictates force applied and mass, so bigger things hit harder.

-The head is harder to hit.  It will be more beneficial to you to outright kill them, but money shots will be hard for new adventurers.

-Multiattack.  Attack and dodge is a safish way to live.  Pick a target, target bodypart, and press (z) to multiattack.  This will also let to block (if you are fast enough) or dodge away.

-Remember that even if you are heavily armored or highly skilled, they fight by attrition.  Its better to run from two attacks than to get one in.

-If you must flee, than consider starting fires as you run.  While you can't* start campfires within sight of hostiles, you can start uncontrolled fires that will begin in your tile.  You path out of it, and they path around it, buying you time.

-Jumping.  Slower adventures actually move faster by jumping than by running.  Climbing trees is slow, but help to weed out the quadrupeds.

-Rivers, streams, brooks.  The water will slow them down, and I swear the river can also dispel them.  they can disappear (vanish) as you cross the river or brook.

-Sleep in hard to get-at locations.  Boogies spawn out of sight in non-specific locations, meaning the harder it is to get to you, the more time you have to wake up and unstun.

-Lairs, caves, and camps do not spawn boogies if you sleep in them.  Other things may find you, however . . .

-Boogies can bleed to death, but feel no pain.

-The faster your move speed, the better your odds.  Drop extra gear if you want to fight.

-I may be forgetting something.  Dont hold me to it.

To make things worse some of the bogeymen can be generated with wings and can fly.

You can [j]ump over or onto campfires. I don't know if critters will attempt to do so.

Just a question on this. While it's always better to sleep in a lair with a corpse you created, I was wondering if you've ever been ambushed by a new real estate agent/homebuyer?

I ask because I vaguely recall (several versions ago 40.10?) I once killed a night troll and then was told to return to that same location where two new night trolls had made their home.

It seems possible.

I completely forgot!  yup, if they can they will.  But the ai doesnt seek to capitalize on it.

i.e. boogey maybe able to(I havent tested it) over a fire, but wont purposely sprint to jump over multiple fires.  rather it might sprint to get to you faster.  The ai doesnt seek to abuse its new spatial abilities unless they are deemed required by the pathfinding.

Likewise they will only climb in order to get to you if they can already sense you, but tge land path is either longer or nonexistent.  They wont jump unless that jump is the most efficent at that moment.

I dont know, eventually caves should become restaffed, and since worldgen is always on  . . .

Also consider that as trolls they were a family unit, and the others went out to hunt or w.e.  Creatures will physically leave their lairs to hunt or kill or kidnap or terrorize.  You may have missed them.

Also, the game may have spawned or respawned them when cleared the cave.  i dont know which.

I haven't played DF in a while (Elite: Dangerous has my time now :P) but I wanted to do some stuff in the newest version and while adjusting my starting 7's skills, I noticed "Gelder."

Looked it up and just as I thought, it was for castration.

So now I am wondering: Can I castrate enemies in Adventure mode by giving my adventurer the Gelding skill? :P

Actually, there are 'gelding blows', but I doubt that the chances of them occurring in combat would be affected by the gelding skill.

So, I keep finding giant cat races designated as recruits, i.e "Giant Lion Recruit" or "Giant Cheetah Recruit", what's going on here? Do they have a military? Are they sentient? Why do they all have names?

they are predators, and because you dont know their names (they only need to attack a historical figure in worlden to get one, and not all ambushers will have one) they get listed by [race, profession]  instead.  hence, lion recruit, because its fufilling a soldier role and has no skill.

Still, seems a little odd to see a nonsentient race with profession tags, especially since it's only the giant ones. I've seen normal lions in the same save file, they were just "Lion".
