It took me untill now to think of playing with a wolf in the arena.
anways, yeah, odor detection works fine there, as long you you are down wind. a human cant smell a giant while standing right next to it down wind though. i do think a humans smell shouldnt be THAT bad.

its more that while in a cave, i'd like to be able to smell if a family of ettins are using it or w/e. maybe make smell permeate a bit in enclosed lairs. thats something a humans sense of smell should be able to do.

I've made this post in the general gameplay section, however perhaps here it's better placed.

New to DF & using DF2014, so please bear with me  :D

So I'm playing DF in adventure mode, and following happens:
a) I start in a fortress (the one where I lived all my life apparently)
b) I have "fun" exploring it and making the local map areas visible
c) eventually I decide to sleep
d) all my explored local map areas revert to unknown (black).

I assume this is by design... can someone confirm?

If so, this means that the maximum persistent level of detail is given by the maps accessible in Travel / Log, correct?

Make sure you have at least one hand free. Press 'h' to get a hold on nearby terrain. Then when you try to move in a direction, a movement menu should come up that allows you to choose where you want to go.

Thanks mate. How much can i train an attribute? If i start at average, what is the max level of that attribute i can reach? I mean, what should my starting attributes be so that i max them at superior without going over, if that makes sense? I don't want to waste starting attribute points into a skill.

Some do not increase, mainly the mental attributes. Physical attributes generally increase with murder/vampirism.

Important to note that after the boost from vampirism, they will never increase.
Best to train them up before becoming a vampire.

Wait, what bug?
Oh dear, I must have gone insane.
Was I mistakenly believing vampirism boosted your stats, then locked them this entire time?

when choking an enemy do they start to lose air as soon as the choke hold is put on them and strangulation just speeds it up or do you have to perform the strangulation to achieve anything

That's how it works. If it's a bug or not is up to debate.
