As enraged as everyone here is, it's internet rage that no one is really serious about. We all know how this is going to end.

Would it be possible for someone to turn this into a court case?  I mean, it violates all sorts of human rights and quite possibly the constitution.  A good decision could possibly set a precedent?
I think I've said this before, but there is/has been a court case where it is being/was decided that this schoom doesn't meet any of the requirements for a proper school. So right now it's only bribes and stalling that keeps them going.

And I know what a troll is. I believe you are one, or at least thought so at first.
Now I just believe you jump to conclusions.

They said harassment

A few phonecalls is hardly harassment.

Also the definition of troll isn't: Someone who disagrees
So... rape and torture = good, harrassment = bad?

I am not saying that

I am saying that starting a campaign based on active harassment with an unregulated unknown group of outraged individuals is going to backfire.

If it is just a bunch of phonecalls, then fine (assuming they arn't those... other kinds). I don't expect that to harm anyone. Letters fine...

Show up at that parents workplace and scream at them (common practice)... I can see bad things happening. Any situation that involved a lot of physically showing up and harassing the parents is where I see problems.

Would it be possible to have a kindof Brown v Board II (ie, a court case to try and make them actually enforce a previous ruling)?

Well, no.  You said the school should be kept open several times, and praised their "creativity".

You'd be surprised what can be done with internet rage. Somebody proxied up and raided the email of one place, and if I said what he posted it'd start another huge flamewar. Someone else found out that a guy was going to send his daughter to one of those places, and.. yeah it's better if I don't post how that one ends either. There are things you can do if you really want to.
I guess so, but I don't think anyone here really wants it enough.

There is a lot of irrelevant discussion going on... and more than a bit of devil-advocation. Not my thread, but as a citizen and a person, this issue is mine too; I'd like to see something come of this.

As enraged as everyone here is, it's internet rage that no one is really serious about. We all know how this is going to end.

Speak for yourself.  I, for example, am calm.

I'm quite incensed, but I entirely intend to be a rational human being and do something about it, myself. I don't like standing by and complaining about a wrong I'm not willing to work on, investigate, or stop. Just got to find my best option, and hope to inspire others to care and do something too.

No offense either, CoD, but do you think it's any better to sit on the side and make generalized, passive comments about the apathy of others?

Again; I'd like to brainstorm specific places to contact about this, to spread word and maybe get an investigation into it. So far we have:
- The local news media in Maine (they'd eat this stuff up)
- Senators and officials in Maine (would work better if contacted by their constituents in-state)
- Better Business Bureau (may not cover human rights issues)
- Various Child-Abuse prevention organizations (may not have the clout to bring much to pass)
- Amnesty International (May have bigger fish to fry)

Give a small group of people high authority and trust over another group of people who are somehow seen as people of lower worth + minimal threat of accountability = ...

Stanford Prison Experiment, anyone?

And ya... this is an especially corrupt school, but these same things happen consistently in school systems of all kinds everywhere.  The school system I spent the most time in was extremely corrupt.  Schools in most places seem to have this uncanny ability to find just the right connections to grant themselves immunity, though... I had a friend who had suffered serious abuse at the hands of faculty at my school and tried for years to get cases moving against them.  Nothing.  They had the support of local authority.  Health investigators would be denied access.  Lawyers would be hung up on.  Nothing would happen.  We were just kids.

Another high school nearby had a teacher who was found to have nude pictures of the entire cheerleading squad in his desk drawer.  That made the news and things happened immediately.

I knew of several teachers growing up who were plainly pedophiles, and at least two who I'm quite sure engaged in some molestation... but so long as they weren't doing something as blatant as leaving nude photos lying around, there was nothing anyone could do.  They covered each other's asses, the local government helped them, education is underfunded and so few are willing to take the jobs, etc... a few rebellious kids couldn't hope to stir up anything.

It would be great if the Elan Torture Center got shut down, but as extreme an example it is, it's still a drop in an ocean...

- Good luck getting the local news media to pay attention
- Representatives generally don't listen unless there's a *lot* of activity
- The BBB is a joke
- The child abuse prevention organizations already know
- So does Amnesty International

Faux news would have a field day with this, Anderson Cooper would do a double three-sixty. Let's send releases.

No I only meant that closing the school down wasn't a real solution to the real problem which was that you have a bunch of unruly kids and teens and parents who want to ship them out being unable or unwilling to take care of them. Though that was back when I thought it was a much cheaper school... Though actually it being so expencive only means to me that closing down the school will actually do absolutely nothing as they will likely just ship them off to a school just as bad or almost there.

As for creativity... I didn't praise them. I only said that this school isn't the worst, isn't that much worse then a lot of bootcamps, it is just more creative. In otherwords I am saying that the problem is systematic not individualistic.

If it is a drop in the ocean, all the more reason to act.  Perhaps better rules on abuse could come from the case.

Even if every school in the country were the same, it'd still be worth fighting.

If there's a story in it, why not?  It'd fill pages and probably sell newspapers.

It's still a feat to do it, and the more you do the more aware people are of it...
