Actually, some of the advocates were former students.
Brainwashing is called Brainwashing for a reason.

I found some more stuff about Elan: http://www.heal-online.org/elan2.htm

Does someone here actually come from Maine? Because if the answer is yes, you should be phoning your representatives right now.
Quote from: That link
Then at the end of the meeting Joe Ricci says ' Now  we're gonna put you upstairs in one of the rooms. It was a room about the size of this. (6x10) and they boarded up the windows, and boarded up the door and locked it. And he said 'Whatever goes on in there goes on.'  It was in July...I know it was in July, because it was my 16th birthday the next day... It was horrible. Six of us all  stuck in there together. The guys- Ray and Johnny would take turns beating each other. Ray would pound his head until he got tired. And they'd take turns having sex with the two girls. One of them didn't care, but the other girl  didn't want to, but they made her. Sean and Ray would keep her food, and that's how they got to her. The day I turned 16 I was sitting in the corner and I mentioned that it was my birthday, and Sean picked me up and said 'Oh it's you're birthday, I have something to give you...' He started to hit me in the face and stuff, and then, well he raped me in there," he  says, his voice trembling.
Still want to defend this thing?

Jesus Christ, that's horrible.

Actually, some of the advocates were former students.

Yyyyeah, I'm not sure their advocacy can be, erm, accepted, because... brainwashing.

Of course the advocates want to say that the kids were saved, they're getting rich off of their suffering! "Tuition" for every single child there is 50,000$!

50,000!?!

Ok forget I said anything...

For 50,000 dollars those parents could send their kids ANYWHERE!!!

Yeah just tear it down
>implying sending them nowhere isn't better
A life with a minimum wage job is better than a life with a normal job and severe mental trauma.

And that probably represses memories like a car compactor compresses stuff.

I really am not trying to defend the place here but...

The recommendations were less than glowing. They were along the lines of "I probably would have died if not for going there, but I still have horrific nightmares about it." Doesn't seem like brainwashing.

Also doesn't seem like a place where you should send your children.

Mental Trauma goes away...

I don't understand the concept with people where bad experiences ruin people forever.

Mind you not saying to inflict it. I am just wondering where someone with possibly repairable mental scarring put with the possibility of a healthy life is better then an entirely messed up person who has very little hope for the future is better. (Mind you I am thinking of another situation much more serious then this when I am thinking about mental damage ruining people forever.)

What you think this school is unique?

No, just expencive.

(Mind you the school would likely be illegal where I live since 2004)

So really the solution is more or less to make educational reforms that would make this sort of educational experience illegal, even in the private sector, as well as drawing up acceptable "Tough love" solutions that while harsh have less of a chance of actually damaging a child or putting them through inhumane treatment that even for the greater good seems despicable and a violation of human rights.

I don't see what positive things you get out of this place, other than graduation. But that's it. Nothing else. Not even education.

Many of these kids probably had plenty of hope for the future, and were more or less normal before this. The few that were actually entirely messed with no hope for a future otherwise were a minority. And it is never mentioned whether the alumni who claimed that the school was effective were hopelessly messed up before, or whether they were basically normal. For that matter, the scars are not, as you call them, repairable. They are permanent, and nothing short of amnesia is going to fix them.

Mental Trauma goes away...
If you spend years and thousands of dollars on therapy and medicaiton, and get lucky, you might be able to get someone who was mentally traumatized in the developmental stage to the point where they can go about their lives without fear of a total breakdown. Maybe.

Well, let's see:
A. You shouldn't try for bad experiences in the goddamn first place!
B. Because messing up the brain before it's finished growing does that. If someone is mentally traumatized as they develop (and even afterwards), it will effect them forever.

Which is why they should all be shut down, not cheapened!

If they're not gonna shut it down they should raise the price. To discourage people from sending their kids there.
