So, does anyone here play guitar and/or bass?  I myself have been playing both for quite some time, just over 14 years on guitar, and about 6 or 7 on bass. I havent been in a band since I moved out of Michigan, so I mostly just make recordings and videos of covers and such. I mostly play heavier, fast stuff, but I also enjoy playing some of the lighter stuff. I can provide some links to a few of my projects if anyone is interested.

Also, if anyone is interested in writing some stuff over the internet, Im all for it. I have already written a song with a guy from Norway and another guy from Cali, and its pretty awesome.

Hehoy. What do you think? Everybody here plays guitar or bass. Or at least I suspect so, seeing as main topics of this forums start with Dwarf Fortress, and this game has a gruffingly arpeggiating main theme... Well, that says it about my skill. And I madly want to play in a band, but I only have an acoustic guitar that works. And no money. Although internal midi always cheers me up.

Anyway, I'd listen to your stuff, as long as you only play heavy, not scream along. And it'd be pretty interesting to hear a distance collaborated project.

Probably not far from the truth. I've been playing classical for about two years now. Actually, since not long after I started playing dwarf fortress, and song_game immediately appealed to me. It was like "Holy shit, this is the kind of guitar I want to play in a game that sounds awesome." Probably a lot of what helped me beat the learning curve. I'm only just now starting to learn the song though.

Can't really help you with collaboration since I'm rubbish and only really write for solo guitar, but I'd be interested in hearing some of your lighter stuff.

Yeah, I dont scream at all, Im terrible at vocals, they arent my thing. Although, when I do video covers, I tend to put the actual song in the background for comparison. When I do mp3 covers, they are done with no vocals, and only sometimes with drums.

This is my cover of New Millennium Cyanide Christ I did  about a month or so ago. The overlays are a bit off at some parts, especially the sliding part, because there is pretty much no reference to what else is going on to judge the timing of it.  The main guitar part was actually done all in one take, and on the first try

And this is a link to an mp3 I did of Laid to Rest by Lamb of god (yes I actually enjoy some of their stuff). The entire song has atleast 2 guitar parts playing at the same time, both separate takes. The drums are arranged by hand using drum samples in Sony Acid. The guitars themselves were recorded using a metronome to keep time.

As for originals, I only have some really low quality stuff that I have been planning on redoing since it sounds terrible, but its heavy and fast stuff. A lot of my stuff has been compared to Opeth, but I think only some parts are similar.


Edit: Also I thought there woudl be some people that play, but you never know. I only met like 4 people in the NA community of soldat that played guitar, and most of them only played for about a year or 2, excluding me and one other guy.

Edit: Oh. I... Do you think you'd be capable of writing a distinct guitar solo a bit softer than what you've linked, maybe with some symphonic feel, with varying tempo? I've been working on a sort of magnum opus for some time, and came to a section for which I just fail to come up with anything suitably epic. Overall it's not really even a rock piece, it's kind of experimental, but I'd like to finish it with something heavy and fast.

Yeah, the Meshuggah song was a really heavy song. I love playing them because of the crazy rhythms that they use, which is a real challenge to wrap your mind around (the verse riff is 23/16 played over 4/4 timing and every 8 measures there is one beat of 1/16 to sync everything up, you actually have to ignore the drums to play it on time).  The mediafire link was a cover of a lamb of god song that I did by myself, it was mostly a test of trying to add drums to my stuff.

This is Closure from Opeth, its an acoustic song for the most part, I messed up a little bit, but overall its pretty nice.

This is half of The Leper Affinity from Opeth, and has some pretty awesome guitar work in it. The intro is a lot heavier than the rest of the song.

As for one of my collabs, I know I have them somewhere buried in 2tb of stuff. Its a strange mix of folk and black metal and the vocals are pretty grating (since its black metal) but it was pretty interesting. Another one was a crazy attempt at power metal, but not retarded, more happy, upbeat sounding metal. That stuff was pretty awesome. And if I cant find any of them, than I can try to get a hold of the guys I worked on them with.

As for your song, I would have to hear it before I can give you a definitive answer, as I can play a wide range of styles. I havent written many solos, as I like to write fast counter rhythm parts instead of being super flashy. But, I can definitely give it a shot.

the third was all samples, and the 4th was a single track.

all of them originals.

The guitar parts were all recorded by plugging my amp into my soundcard.

also just be warned the transition between the second and third song is a bit jarring

Pretty creative, unfortunately I dont think I could come up with something that would fit in nicely with that. Pretty much what ever I would put there wouldnt fit too well with the overall style of the song. I will still try to attempt something, and maybe something interesting comes up.

Nice, Ive heard a bunch of good stuff about those bass's. I personally dislike anything fender, they just feel and play like crap to me.  I have an Ibanez SRDX505 5 string bass, and a Jackson Dinky DK2 guitar. Jacksons are my favorite brand of guitars, they are perfect for metal. I used to have a King V KV2 but it got stolen by an old guitarist I was in a band with.

I also dig some Washburns, the necks feel really nice since they are so thin, side to side, but they are just a little too fat back to front. My brother in law has an old Dime Slime, which was one wicked guitar, except it was extremely heavy.  I was at a band practice, and I was saying I need to take a break for a few minutes, because the guitar was hurting, and the other guitarist laughed and said, "Dude, dont be a pussy, Im playing a Les Paul". I handed him the guitar, and he almost dropped it cause it was so heavy. We both laughed, and took a break.

Oh, also, no lessons here. Im 100% self taught.

About 3 lessons in the beginning here, although quantum physics knows I could have used more. Oh well. Slacker till the end. And I've got a crappy Yamaha something guitar which sizzled, possibly from my plugging it directly into a computer. Yay.

Ooh, yeah. Your right hand is painful to even look at. By the way, is it hard to figure out such a song? I've got some kind of a speed limit above which making out notes in a song is very hard for me. I can't be sure from just listening, but I imagine this song would give me a lot of trouble... to make a midi of, I'm not even going to talk about performing.
