It has become needed. Have you seen how many pages of users there are with 0 posts?

Just because they don't post doesn't mean they don't read the forums.

Lurkers have rights too.

Far easier to purge users if they have had almost no activity at all (last time they logged in, for instance).

It helps to cull out bots from regular members and stuff. Otherwise they don't have any special use I can think of.

Heh, I remember once I looked at a thread, and on the last page a few posts up there was a post that I didn't remember posting... I was freaked out by it thinking someone was logging into my account. Then I realized the thread was a necro, and that post was from two months ago, the fact that there were only a few posts between it and the most recent one threw me off.

Also I am not a bot.

Just because they don't post doesn't mean they don't read the forums.

You don't need an account to lurk here.

But there should obviously be a check to see if someone signed up in the last three days or something.

An account gives several benefits, like being able to know what threads are new since you last logged in. It may also allow you to see certain hidden forums (if there were any). It lets you configure preferences, like the Theme you want for the forum, or the timezone, or how you want certain values such as date formats displayed.
