What do Positions do, exactly?
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:33:24 pm »

What are Positions for, exactly? I have no real clue why these are here, what they do, or why Toady One, Baughn, and ThreeToe have unique ones, or why everyone below ten posts gets a different one from everyone else. Does anyone here know what these are for or what they do, or why we have them?

They do nothing.

Toady and Threetoe have different ones because they're the creators! And admin. And our gods, I guess.

Baughn has one for the 40d# OpenGL stuff he did, I imagine.

Yes, and that makes sense, but that still doesn't explain why we have them or why anyone with fewer than ten posts is an escaped lunatic.

Certain women like certain positions. Don't worry about it, it's your skill that matters, not how much you know.

I don't know if I should kick you or hug you.

I dunno, probably happened on a whim. I guess it can kinda be useful to tell if someone signed up just to advertise something, or as a troll, but ten posts seems like too small a limit for that to be useful.

It is probably one of those things that no one knows.

I don't know if I should kick you or hug you.

Hug him around the windpipe.

Cuddle his trachea.

Toady dosen't want to promote jerkassness about post count (or at least that's what I've been told), so we only have the "Just Registered" and "Has Posted A Bit"  positions in lieu of the title system other forums tend to be fond of. Toady and ThreeToe own this site, so they get their own titles.

I imagine that the Escaped Lunatic tag will help for cleaning out the member archives someday, should it ever become needed.

It has become needed. Have you seen how many pages of users there are with 0 posts?

Tags have nothing to do with housecleaning. To do that is just a SQL command which goes off the number of posts directly.

If I knew what SMF's tables looked like I could write it myself in about ten minutes, double-checking for any other potential sources of info (PMs).

~237.7

So, about 1/3 of all users.

"Escaped Lunatic" is a spam detector. It's better that TIGSource's Manbaby :P

I quite like the B12 system.

I recall that someone came up with a nice explanation to do with the Escaped lunatic status. But now I forgot it.
