Adventure Mode help
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:26:49 am »

Vague topic title, amirite?  8)

Anyways, I've been playing Adventure Mode for awhile and I've always went as a Dwarf. Never played any other races because it's called Dwarf Fortress and I don't want to upset my little dwarves.

ANYWAYS...

I've made Axedwarves and Sworddwarves and they have all met an untimely death pretty early on. I'm going to say I have bad luck because I hear Axes are the best weapons in the game so far, but regardless I'm wondering what are weapons are good for a dwarf? I'm thinking of making a Speardwarf or Hammerdwarf. (Can either of those use shields?)

Also, here is my attribute set up.

High Agility
Above Average Strength/Toughness/Endurance/Recuperation
Average everything else

I think you should try every weapon and find the one who you fight better...and even fight a fight style like breaking lefs or w/e... it's all up to you

Yeah, I'm actually pretty good with my targeting and whatnot. I just don't spam a directional key on an enemy.
I plan on trying speardwarf and/or hammerdwarf but I don't know if they can use shields.

I personally like spears.  It's fun to skewer my enemy's internal organs, although it doesn't work well through iron armor (bronze spear).  It's quite effective against megabeasts because it has a decent chance of tearing apart the heart and causing a sure bleed-out.

My other favorite weapon is my left foot.  Pressing A-a-c-f on a standing enemy makes you kick them in the head, which I imagine as a roundhouse kick through their head  8).

I'm guessing they are multigrasp, so you don't need a shield? Also, I'm guessing spears aren't one of those weapons that are good against everything?

You can use a sheild with every weapon (even two-handed swords!)

Spears aren't multigrasp, but pikes are.

Stabbing attacks like spears (but not as much swords) can shatter bones, open arteries, and damage internal organs.  They ignore natural armor (like scales) but only sometimes penetrate metal armor.  They are good at disabling by stabbing extremities and severing arteries and nerves, and also good for destroying internal organs.  Shots to the upper and lower bodies also have a fair chance of severing the spine.  Stabs to relatively small creatures (including bogeymen!) can actually sever body parts.

Slashing attacks are best against small unarmored targets.  They can sever arteries and nerves consistently and even cut off limbs.  They are best at killing through bleed-outs and headshots, since slashing attacks don't hit internal organs often.  They often glance off armor and cannot easily penetrate natural armor like a hydra's scales.

Crushing weapons are only effective at causing pain and headshots.  Crushing attacks to the upper body can occasionally drive a rib through an organ, but this is uncommon.  Crushing attacks are good at shattering bones in limbs to cause pain and disability or caving in heads for a kill.  They rarely cause bleed-outs.

In fact, you can use as many shields and weapons as you want.  If you [r]emove a weapon or shield from your backpack, it puts it into your  hands no matter what you're already holding, so you could wield 10 of each weapon and 20 shields with no penalty except the weight.

Well now that's cool and lame at the same time.  ::)

Well, I won't worry about that too much. Right now I can't decide between spear and hammer.  :(

Or, if you don't want to exploit you can remember that the size of your person matters. A dwarf cannot hold a two-hander and a shield normally, while a human can, since humans are bigger. Normally elves move the fastest, but are smaller than humans too.

Well... I've been dying. A lot. Before I start again, do you think some of you can look over my set up and see if there are any major flaws? My attribute set up is on the first post, and here is my skill set up.

Status: Hero
Race: Dwarf
Skills
Proficient Axedwarf
Skilled Fighter
Competent Shield User
Adequate Dodger
Novice Armor User

everything else is default

Edit: Changed the stuff.

Are you Min-Maxing your stats? like v low intelligence, musicality, patience etc because they really have no effect on game play whatsoever.

Do any of those stats even matter? I already started on the set up I have now so it's too late, but for my next character I plan on doing that. (min-maxing)

Go to this page and look at the bottom.
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Attributes
If anything there that doesn't relate to combat at all you should get rid of, plus it gives you a few extra points.
Also, your starting copper dagger has the best penetration of any weapon for some odd reason, so it is great for piercing armor, but I also find it mostly just skips tearing through muscle, skin, and fat and just breaks/fractures/chips bones, so its great for pain, and it doesn't make them bleed.
