Genociding immigrants

My last fortress reached 80+ dwarves, and management became impossible. Dorfs run about everywhere, throwing parties, making trouble with the local fauna, spamming me about stockpile issues, running around in circles, chased about by skeletal groundhogs etc.

Somehow, with the immigration waves being as rapid as they are, I never really manage to assign enough work. I get quantity rather than quality, and making sure the valuabe, old faithful dwarves survive is pretty hard with all those Urists I drown in. I'd prefer one dwarf on every labour, maybe two later on.

So obviously there needs to be some sort of genocide plan here, executed in time before the immigrants manage to befriend a quality dwarf. I was thinking of a big room, with menacing wooden spikes (ONE spike per square in order to kill them slowly), and then making a burrow which I assign to the immigrants I want to get rid of. Would this work? Last time I tried to assign an individual dwarf to a burrow, he just froze and refused to move until the burrow was removed.

How do you manage your immigrants? Let them live? Suicide missions?

All useless immigrants go straight into the military. If they survive the first goblin ambush, I send them into the second goblin ambush.  ;)

Build a 'diving board' that's essentially a tower at the top, with a small bit jutting out that can be easily cut off with a support attached to a lever. If burrows work, asign all the them to it. If you want to be REALLY evil make sure they have enough food and booze up their, and wait out until a siege/ambush/elven caravan. Then drop them on top.

Set your population cap so that you never get a Town size fort. Maybe 30 dwarves. Then the immigrants will stop arriving. You can also set the baby cap separately, so that only 25% of the population is babies/children, or set it to a hard cap so that there's only 10 babies at a time.

oh my god, i never thought about letting them survive up there until a siege! brilliant!

oh my god, i never thought about letting them survive up there until a siege! brilliant!

Dwarven rain, some stay dry while others feel the pain!

Or, here's an idea. Lock them away with food and beer. Let them socialise, ALOT, untill they're all great friends, then make some of them wood cutters and make them watch as their lover is killed. Just make sure they're locked away behind a wall and not a door, even beetter, put in a lever that activates spikes!

I prefer to keep an extra 20-odd fully furnished rooms in my fort. When migrants arrive, I instantly open up Dwarf Therapist and assign them all to either a job or hauling duty. There's always something I can use one dwarf more on, like smelting ores, strand extracting, farming above-ground plants, etc. Might send a squad to escort them in case it's dangerous outside. When they arrive they can usually start working right away.

Killing them seems like a waste to me. Especially when you can use them to, even if only slightly, increase your fort's overall efficiency. This may not be Chaotic Evil like most might prefer, but as a great creature once said, killing willing servants is detrimal to establishing a long-term plan.

 I just make 'em all mason/haulers to support the 30 to 50 actually useful Dwarves in the fort.  The miners clear out massive tracts of stone for the mason/hauler populace to dump into a quantum stockpile and turn into blocks, which then go into whatever huge construction I'm working on now.  It's busywork, plain and simple, and they seem to love it.  Plus, it keeps the workshops nice and tidy when you have almost a hundred Dwarves basically dedicated to hauling and almost nothing else.

What I do is I build a closeable entrance in the front of my fort with either floodgates or simply doors to prevent unwanted intruders, e.g. immigrants, and then wall off the rest of my fort. When my population gets where I want it, or if I don't want more immigrants at that time, I close the floodgates or forbid the doors (making sure that everyone I want is inside).

Outside I have a meeting area/zone that is inactive until immigrants arrive, situated right next an atom smasher. I think you know where this is going. Also, it works for dumping, since zones can be reassigned with the click of a keyboard letter. Convenient and non-messy.

Actually falling on another creature cushions the blow regardless of height. You've got to drop them to the sides of the path in. maybe make some bracket shaped walls [ ] to channel the visitors.

Now as for keeping migrants out while you continue to trade: there's a nice way to make a toggled entryway. Dig down a level relative to the depot then make some ramps up that lead into a dead end depot. Place the fort on the other side of the ramps and place a bridge over it. Now you just pull the lever for the bridge most of the time allowing traders to come in and unpack or any desired migrants to all cluster thanks to a burrow assignment or what have you, and then you lower the bridge so the ramps go nowhere but the dead end the depot is in leads into your fort.

Though in general so long as you have your dwarves locked inside and a meeting zone outside for newcomers they don't mix too much. The above design just makes it tons easier to trade without the migrants being dead yet.

You could always make them into herbalists, woodcutters and hunters. Casualties should be fairly common and they'll earn their keep.

If you like a challenge, not training your conscripts at all is a great way to increase challenge and get rid of unwanted immigrants. If required, you might consider giving them a haubergeon for added protection and increased injuries versus deaths so your medical staff can get training. If you want to be all RP about it, bronze won't rust and would thus require less maintenance.

I just use Dwarf Therapist to make military squads and lots of haulers, and maybe double up on a few professions.  Playing without this utility is hell and playing with it is easy.

Create a burrow in a mined out ore vein or other corner of the fortress and assign the immigrants to it.  Put enough coffins inside to accomodate all but one of these dwarves, and just one unit each of food and drink.

Then seal it the chamber.

Only a few of them will eat.  And then, as their fellows begin to succumb to starvation, thirst, and madness, they will realize why the chamber held any food at all: so someone would have the strength left to bury the others.

After they all have passed, engrave that one lonely survivor's name on a slab and put it up near where the chamber's entrance was sealed - a lonely, solemn reminder of what happens to those who enter your fortress unbidden.

You know, it's possible that the problem isn't really the immigrants.

It may could might suppose d'you imagine that you just can't manage dwarves?

EDIT: No, I'm sorry, you could be right. Blame them, blame them all to hell for ruining your game! How dare they be a part of Dwarf Fortress!
