Why are almost every mountain boxed in with many different boxes? I'm no noob but this is new to me in 31.18. I can't embark on them either...

You cant embark on a mountain, there needs to be at least 1 square of non-mountain in your embark window

The reason for this is that entities cannot cross mountains on the world map, this means that if you settle in a valley entirely surrounded by mountains then other races cant reach you (your own civ probably cant reach you either)

Not sure exactly what you mean by the boxes around the mountains, if in the local window of the embark a lot of the land is covered in some kind of large square/rectangle then thats likely another civilizations fort/foresthome/mountainhome.  I think it is possible to embark ontop of another settlement but it does some odd stuff

I know that, been playing this game a long time. :)

This is what I'm talking about:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The boxes cover about 90% of all mountain tiles.

Is this normal?

These appear to be the way other civ settlements are handled now.  The last couple of updates have focused on expanding the tracking of world civ progress.  So now cities, towns, and villages take up real space on the world map.

yeah thats a settlement.  as far as i understand you should be able to embark ontop of them.  apparently the natives become friendly but not part of your fort.  never tried and you said you couldnt......maybe you can embark partly on them but not fully?  (guessing a bit)

Well, this seems appropriate...

You can't embark on areas alerady taken by other civs.
However has anybody tried what happens if you carefully ask them to move during adventure mode and explain them that the bogymmen might stop killing everyone in their sleep that way (read kill them all in their sleep). Whatever you can  embark on areas with other civs?

Well, you could embark on other settlements before... not now, though. And that sprawl is taking up my volcanoes and awesome river crossings, darn it! Toady will fix it soon, I hope.

Also, BAWKSES!

And this is more appropriate, I think.

Embarked on a haunted volcano. I am currently terrorized by skeletal alligators.

In older versions when you embarked on another site the game expanded your embark rectangle to include it. Unfortunately now that would mean that you'd be embarking on 24x24 sized areas and the game can't handle all of that, and you probably wouldn't want to play with it trying to.

Eventually Toady can rewrite it with some edge consistency so that like a town with a wall won't have wildlife and sieges coming onto the map from the middle of town. This will probably happen when you can start doing the farming for your fortress off site and generally have some of your own sprawl. This isn't going to be for awhile but in the mean time just stop world gen around year 300 or so and you shouldn't run into a whole lot of that stuff.

press tab and look at the local dwarven civilizations
unless I'm mistaken about the situation, the flashing symbols should cover the entire mountain range
