Completely lost on installing on a Mac
« on: November 25, 2010, 01:43:34 am »

Ok, so I downloaded the latest build of the game, and have no idea what else I need to download to make it work.  I have an intel Mac running 10.4.11.  I don't know if this is compatible, but there is no real info about installing on a Mac.  Any links to further needed software would be great, and please don't link to the wiki, that was useless.

Thanks,
RisnDevil

Download the mac version.

Run the "df" file in terminal.
Profit!

Thank you for the offered help, but that only helps me so much.  I know I have a Mac, but I am still new to the Mac world, only having just migrated.  Whenever I try to run it, it executes the Display Free Disk Space command.  What am I not doing correctly?  A little more play-by-play would help, though, truly, thank you for the last bit of help.

you should run it from the directory of where df script is.

there is a step by step guide on making it work like a proper mac app

Or, simply double-click the 'df' file.

Ok,

Did all that, and it starts to launch, then closes out.  Are there files or programs which I have to have already installed for this game to work?  I don't know what they would be (again getting used to Macs) but a PC example or equivalent would be like having to have the .NET Framework installed.  Is there something it uses/needs that I don't have?

Thanks for the help so far.

And double-clicking the df file does not work, either.  As an aside note:  Is anyone certain this is compatible with OS X 10.4?

I guess you need X11.
Do you have X11 installed?

edit: either get it from your install dvd or http://roundhere.net/journal/install-x11-on-mac-os-x-10-4-tiger-without-dvd/

Have you turned on truetype in the df init files? (you'd do this by editing a text file).

Otherwise, you might be running into the same problem as that other guy (I dont remember his name), check out the current release threads in the announcement subforum. Toady changed compilers around 31.12, and it has messed with support on older systems. (windows XP SP1,2; 10.4). I'm not sure we've figured out why, or if it is for everyone.

If it is that problem, your best solution is to run DF emulated. You could use virtualbox, parallels, or some other windows environment, or using WINE. There are a few WINE DF tutorials on the forum because 31.01 came out as windows only first, and we had to do something. Its not as nice, but it should circumvent a compatability issue.

I had trouble running DF when it wasn't in my Applications folder, but that hasn't been an issue for a while now.

Alright,

Downloaded the X11 from that link (that took two days).  Tried to run, no good.

Moved to Applications Folder.  Tried to run, no good.

Edited the df init file to turn on TRUETYPE.  Tried to run, no good.

Opened Terminal to drag and drop the file, hit enter, didn't work and have a different message.  The new message is posted below.

dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found: _pthread_mutexattr_destroy$UNIX2003
  Referenced from: /Applications/df_osx/libs/libstdc++.6.dylib
  Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

  Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

/Applications/df_osx/df: line 5:  1663 Trace/BPT trap          ./dwarfort.exe

Don't want to use wine or some other emulator like that, mostly because I don't want to have to download or get my hands on them, as that takes forever.  Plus, I left PCs/Windows because I wanted a Mac, not to make my Mac act like Windows.  I really appreciate all the help so far, and hope you can help me resolve this issue.

Good news: The X11 problem is solved.
Bad news: I don't know wtf is your new problem. It's probably related to your OS version.

It could be. I've run DF on 4.7, I think, but never run the new versions on anything other than 5.8.

Is there a reason why you're still on 10.4?

WINE isn't as heavy weight (smaller install, no windows liscence required) as parallels and virtualbox, but it does take some setup. If you can't upgrade to 10.6 I'd give that a serious look.
