You could use a pulse laser, but the sword won't glow and you'll have to supply the zwung-zwung yourself.

As I recall it, the History Channel show I watched on Star Wars tech being viable claimed that with some sort of device-whos-name-escapes-me the size of an apartment block, you could probably make a plasma stream that looked like a lightsaber. They went on to say that all technology gets smaller, so it may not be totally out of the question in the future.

Isn't a "pulse laser" basically a combination of a continuous laser and a strobe light?

Michio Kaku show on the Science Channel, did an episode on a lightsaber, and draft a sci fi plasma saber based on current understanding of materiel sciences.

It was a telescoping carbon fiber tube riddled with holes. With a turbo fan on the bottom of the handle, and, I forget the battery and heating element...

But he made it sound plausible,  ...someday.

A lightsaber probably isn't cost effective unless you can get actual Jedi to use it, some random soldier swinging a lightsaber could be easily killed by a hillbilly with a pistol

We live in the twenty first century.

Outfitting and training a soldier is probably not very cost effective when they can just be nuked from low orbit.

well, I suppose that this is true. anybody who dreads collateral damage being caused obviously isn't looking at the cost vs. destruction ratio.
therefore, the nuke must be effective.
therefore a nuclear winter must also be quite cost effective.
therefore normal winter must also be cost effective....
which must mean that most things are cost effective in terms of destruction, that is, unless the destructiveness is the intended effect.
