Technological Advance for one simple purpose.
« on: November 24, 2010, 07:45:49 am »

After kingdom mode is introduced I would love technological advancement just so I could leave the planet, go to the moon, build a magma cannon and take care of all the elven civs from orbit.

Toady has already announced that he is not going past some date (somewhere around 1400-1500) and that its going to stay that way. So thats that.

I don't think that the picture was needed but a search would probably have been nice.
Well what I would like to see is a natural development without technical development. This would mean that as the population rises and the same resources remain then lesser armored peasant armies become more common. This causes diffrend weapons to become more effective. With the chance in weapons we could have changing strategies ext. Which would give us a form of development.

Once worlds still change after worldgen, the things thijser says will happen purely because of economic circumstances.

For instance:
Your fort has been trading profitably for many years, making the human civ you trade with wealthy and powerful. This human civ sends out more and more caravans to fatten their coffers, which leads to the destitute elves raiding the caravans in desperation. As a result, the humans send out soldiers with their caravans to ward off the elves, but the cost of the soldiers is too great and so the whole caravan network collapses. The human nation, thrown into disarray, splits up and villages are forced to forge their own weapons and armour, making such things ubiquitous and supporting the growth of adventuring bands. But these bands anger the natural creatures, causing them to roam about, killing as they go. In the wake of these creatures, civs start to fall and the goblins move in, looking for a slice of the pie.

In the above scenario, you go from normal DF, to an age based around the mastery of trade and stock trading, through to an age of weak, poorly armed soldiers, then to small groups of hardened, well armoured soldiers. After that, you nee to completely refocus away from your economic fortress and focus on defending yourself from greedy adventurers, fewer in number, but a vast, mixed bag of skills and equipment. Then natural creatures are the order of the day, glass cannons, somewhat, leading you to increase your meat and leather labours. Finally, growing wealthy and powerful on the rich supply of prey, you enter the age of large, well equipped armies, militia no more, formations and global conquest.

Sounds like enough development for me.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Huh?

Dwarves are already extremely advanced! The technology they possess is astounding, far beyond the technology that exists even today.

---Create and destroy mass with ease by reshaping raw materials into finished objects with more mass than the raw materials, or conversely turning a big object into a smaller object with no waste material or even destroy matter entirely without causing nuclear explosions.
---Build indestructible buildings. Only dwarves know the secrets to disassemble those infinitely powerful walls.
---Build structures out of chunks of ice that will survive forever even submerged in magma, thus they have discovered 100% efficient insulation.
---Generate unlimited power using only minute amounts of water as fuel, which is eventually depleted. This is how a fusion reactor works.
---Able to grow almost infinite amounts of food from a tiny plot of land without ever depleting the land.
---Can shape and carve stone with their bare hands and/or beards.

Kingdom mode is the common name of Dwarf Fortress once the full extent of the military, caravan and diplomacy arcs have been finished. Essentially, v.1

Prove that this is a common phrase.

Hmm. Looks like I can't. It appears that actually calling it Kingdom "Mode" is unique to this thread, but I've heard it referred to with the use of Kingdom many times recently.

Anyway, I really think technological advancement should be limited in scope if its ever even implemented. This isn't space-laser fortress.

Hence why we need technological advancement :D

I kid, I kid. I'm against tech advancement in DF. I want social changes, I want military changes, I want diplomatic changes. Technological changes, keep them.

Would not mind if this was added at like the end of dwarf fortress for modders, or something that can be done during world gen.

You can already mod things like that in.

Want to mod in lightsabers? Guns with a hugely powerful ranged attack? Its easy.

Thats not what the suggestor is asking, he is asking for the History to be able to go on for a long time. That technology eventually advances past that naturallly.
