I can has films plz?
« on: November 24, 2010, 04:32:00 am »

I think I've run out of films I want to watch, so I'm coming here for help.

My all time favourites run from Equilibrium, One flew over the Cuckoos Nest, The Matrix, Oldboy, Battle Royale, eXistenZ, The Last Samuria, 1984, The Devils Rejects etc.
Anything that makes you think, really.

Oh yeah, it would be a definite bonus if it was in English.  I love Japanese films, but they can be a right pain when subtitled.

How can you stand to watch Japanese films in English? That is just painful.

Gattaca, Moon, Rollerball(197? version, not the 2000-ish one), Blade Runner, Scanner Darkly, Space Odyssey 2001, 12 Monkeys, Brazil, are all thinking man's SF movies. Often minimalist, but always with something to say, kind of in the same vein as Equilibrium and eXistenZ.

Primer deserves it's own spot on the list, as it'll intimidate your intelligence with its realistic-ish take on time travel and lack of expository dialogue.

Jeunet & Caro's Delicatessen and especially the City of Lost Children, are uniqely whimsical dystopias, with an unforgettable visual style and Grimm's fairy-tale-like feel.

Darren Aronofsky's movies tend to leave you with a lot to think about: Pi, Requiem for a Dream, the Fountain.

ninja: have seen only maybe 2/3rds of movies on de5met's list, but they all were really good.

I recommend watching Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards. It's pretty recent, a 2009 film I think, and it's got a pretty interesting take on WWII. It's the first movie I've seen that makes the Nazi soldiers look human (And not the cold "robots" they are in other films).

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Hey, let's not forget Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - the way I see it, these are the only two movies Jim Carrey ever really played in.

Solaris. Preferably the 1970s Tarkovsky version.

Soderbergh's is okay, but it doesn't open with five minutes of highway.

Also by Soderbergh, Schizopolis is funny. It's not really thoughtful but it pretends to be.
