What wild animal do you think is the scariest?
« on: November 23, 2010, 09:21:46 pm »

So imagine that you are a dwarf, wandering through a typical fortress. Suddenly you are confronted by one of the many wild animals you can encounter in fortress mode. Since you're not an adventuring bad ass, you have no experience fighting alone and are now at the mercy of a terrifying beast.

Which would you hate to encounter the most?

For me, it would be a jabberer. Those things sound absolutely terrifying. Crushed between the beaks of a massive cave bird, which then swallows you whole. To me that's one of the worst ways to go. I have no idea how goblins can tame and ride those things.

Also, try to exclude forgotten beasts, mega beasts, and clowns since those are the most obvious choices.

I'd say Reachers would be more terrifying
I always picture a giant pair of humanoid hands reaching out of the darkness and throttling something.

Pretty much all cave-dwellers, but giant olms have a special place in my heart.

Probably a creeping eye. Imagine: You're wandering around your fortress when you notice a rock on the wall.
"Funny. That wasn't there yesterday," you say.

It then opens it eye, which glows, and then leaps at you and tears you apart with four stony hands. It does this apparently for the evulz, because it then just leaves without eating you.

On the subject of creeping eyes, I've had tons of dead creeping eyes in my caverns.
Looks like they. . .

Fixed.

creeping eyes have to be the most unscariest creature ever.
Ooooh! A walking sandbag with one eye! That is some hardcore campfire story material.

I think Cave floaters also contend to being scary.
Think about it. A floating pod. That spews gas when punctured.
They could be some nice landmines!

Horrible, giant, indestructible testicles.

My hammer, it does NOTHING.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

Because I'm incredibly immature, I still find that to be amusing.

Also I think one of the reasons I'm scared of Jabberers is because they remind me of burrowing snargets from Pikmin. Those things terrified me when I was younger.

You find yourself once again in the dark, damp caverns. Why did it have to be you who would be designated as the web collector? Better make this quick so you can retreat back to the safety of the fortress proper.

Aha! Your keen dwarven eyes spot a translucent string of spider silk! You rush towards it. You're not staying in this stupid cave much longer!

As you prepare to spin the silk into your beard hairs (the traditional dwarven silk-gathering practice of 'weaving'), you reach for the web... but your arm brushes against something. Something big, sticky, and nearly invisible. Could this be? A giant cave spider web? Jackpot! You can't wait to take this back to the loom!

Only... it seems the web is a bit stickier than you thought. You try to separate the long silky strands from your hairy arm, but you just end up making a mess of it all and tangling yourself up. You can't pull it off, you can't shake it off. You're stuck fast. You stand still for a bit, looking up at the silky, trembling strand. If only you could...

Wait, trembling? You peer at the darkness above, and the darkness looks back, with it's eight beady eyes, moving down the strand with it's long, hairy limbs...

Any and all zombified/skeletal aquatic life.

Think about it:
Urist is wandering along to the booze cave, grumbling about how it's plump helmet wine AGAIN, when he reaches for the door to the booze cave and hears a low hiss and some scraping noises. Dismissing this as sobriety hallucinations he continues onward and has some booze with his buddies and then goes back to work. As the day wears on, Urist can't shake the feeling that he can still hear the hissing and scraping from earlier, but carries on because the mayor REALLY needs that chert bauble made.

The night settles in and Urist goes to his little corner of the fort, tired from a good day's work, and still hears those noises on occasion, as he lays down, the noises stop and he settles off to sleep. Urist jolts awake in the middle of the night because he feels this dread like when one feels a booze crisis coming, something is laying on him in his bed and it doesn't feel like the kittens that he's seen in the fort. A hiss emanates from the mass and Urist brings himself to see what it is and...

Contrary to popular belief, the most dangerous animal is not the lion or tiger or even the elephant. The most dangerous animal is a shark riding on an elephant, just trampling and eating everything they see
