So apparently I have a monster on my mountain
« on: November 23, 2010, 04:29:38 pm »

I'm starting a new fortress, pretty standard affair. The dwarfs decide to stop the wagon on the very peak of the mountain, but that's fine. I decide to just check the Unit List, and I see this!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

'Man of The Night?' I thought. 'What on earth is THAT!' So I zoomed to his location, and he appears to have a lair of sorts.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1: Rakust, Man of The Night

2: A cedar table, a nickle silver cauldron, some periclase mortar and some ant remains. Most of it is ichor covered

3: A cedar door

To finish off I decided to see his unit description. This one speaks for itself!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not only have I never seen or heard of one of these before, but his lair isn't that far from where I decided to carve my entrance. Which could possibly lead to lots of Fun. Regardless, I thought I should show you guys. This is... new. And a little bit frightening.

Afraid not. I've never quite got the hang of it.

Regardless, I never thought something like that would actually appear on my map! Am I going to get attacked by Boogeymen next?

Bogeymen are only in adventure mode, as only adventure mode has a day/night cycle.
Remember that night creatures will tear your dorfs up, so try to avoid til you have some decent troups.
Also, if you play adventure mode you can find the lairs of more exciting creatures, like hydras and dragons, and embark
there for more fun...

For some reason, yes. I've also walled in the entrance just to be safe.

Thanks for the heads up. And THERE'S a good idea!

You could try drowning it.
If that doesn't work, excess amounts of war animals will do the trick.

Bahaha, yes! Can you imagine this?

"I AM THE MAN OF THE NIGHT! I AM TERROR INCARNATE!"
"Strike the earth!"
"WHO DARES DISTURB RAKUST? I WILL WEAR YOUR SKIN LIKE A PONCHO."

Night creatures have lungs but do not need to breath, so drowning is out of the question.
Check to see if he has some sort of knife, because they often do, and if s/he does I wouldn't bother sending war animals unless you have alot. Even then he can only die of blood loss/decapitation/being cut in half.

A have Sasquash in my current fort. He is quite unfriendly neighbor but he's truly lazybones and don't go out much so I was fine with him. When kobold thief tried to rob him he had promptly brutalized intruder, alas one not so clever woodcutter decided to move corpse to refuse stockpile and had angered the owner of cavern, what's worse he brought him right into our fort I had to activate said woodcutter and he managed to live long enough for our better trained woodcutter and caravan guard to arrive. Reinforcements managed to wound him and chase him away. Later he had returned and performed a little jogging along with  liaison, and finally calmed down and went home.

These things are new addition, and main target for adventurers quests. They're something like semi-semi-megabeast (or a forgotten ones), yours looks tougher though, being night creature.

You obviously found a new species of smart kobold.
Way to go, you killed the only smart kobold's to have existed.
See? Not everyone avoids you!

Hmm, when I tried to embark on where I knew a night creature lair was it just changed the lair shape and filled it with naked mole dogs... interesting...

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Maybe it died, and mole dogs now inhabit it. Its obviously possible to get adventure lairs in your embark, by seeing Mantonio do it.

Is that rock that his lair is carved out of?

If so, he's easily dealt with. Wall off the lair and dig a tunnel that follows the outline of his lair. Smooth the stone and carve fortifications in several locations. Then introduce him to that marvelous bit of technology known as the crossbow.

If it's dirt, then it's going to require more work.

Wall off the lair for now either way.
