weapons recording kills
« on: November 23, 2010, 12:46:43 pm »

Early on in my adventures, I secured the purchase of a bronze halberd, trading up from my copper battleaxe.  I love the halberd, you can both slash and thrust with it, depending on wither you want to lop something off or penetrate an organ, and how much you want to risk a stuck-in.  My halberd has many notable kills, so even if i ever find an Iron one, i probably wont trade up.

Lately my band of merry men was battling a hill titan in its temple.  It was a giant flying leach, which made it a bit difficult to wrestle (shortage of limbs, and all that).  Having only a body and no head, and its wings seemingly too thick to lop off, it was slow going killing this thing.

It bit a swordsman in the head, sucked out his blood, and spat in poison.  A few of the party died, but we brought it down in the end.

How was it brought down?  well, I had an opportunity-attack (one of the blue !) and I took it.  I kicked it in the mouth, bruised it's brain, and it died.

Which brings me to my lament.  The kill is obviously not recorded on the halbard, even though it pierced the Titan many times.  but it is not recorded on either of my boots or my socks either!  I wanted a Titan slaying boot, perhaps that I could name The Boot of Braining or something.  There is an ichor splatter on one boot, so I suppose I could rename that one.  Its just a shame not to have the notable kill tracked there

edit: i take it back, i cant rename the boot.  sad day.

Halberds are awesome, but have one crucial disadvantage - no shields.

It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

i think thats only true if youre a dwarf, who is not properly sized for the weapon.  I have a Iron Shield paired with it right now, in my other hand.  but maybe im not properly using the shield?  I get the option to bash and wrestle with it, but maybe its not blocking hits?  I'm not sure how I would tell.

I would find it logical that if you are not strong enough (and in case of a halberd that means super-strong, considering the huge rotating momentum polearms have), you should have a hefty penalty on cutting, and somewhat lesser penalty for stabbing. Historically, halberds were wielded exclusively in both hands, while shield + spear setup was quite common, especially in earlier centuries before sword manufacturing process became cheap enough to equip common troops with them.

you can see if you get a penalty for using a shield with a weapon by dropping everything else(only have that weabon in your hands)
then look at your inventory, if it says 'multigrasp' next to your free hand, you are using both hand to hold the weapon and recieve a penalty for taking something in your other hand.

Weapons record kills, that's true, but it is also recorded on you, that means, click z and d and you will see your description, all the kills you have are there, weapon or no weapon, kicks are unarmed, no weapon records it. misc objects also record kills, I used a blue jay to kill buzzards, it recorded all the kills and said the "slayer" was me.

Yeah.  I just retired this guy and it tracks the kill in legends mode.  most say "killed with bronze halbard" but the one titan just says that the adventurer killed it, and no mention of with what.

Maybe if I was wielding the boot, and bashed him with it.  I should go kill some bandits with that boot to see if I can get it some glory.

So, I thought in an older version that weapons could be named?  Does this not happen any more?  This halberd has like 30 notable and 60 other kills, and it had not gotten a title yet.  Speaking of which, I have not noticed titles being given to equipment in dwarf mode either -- though I admit I have not seen as much butchery with any single item in dwarf mode on this version.

Halberds are awesome, but have one crucial disadvantage - no shields.

Who says you can't use a shield with a halberd? Empty your hands, pick up the halberd, then pick up the shield, and if the shield goes into your backpack, (r)emove it and it'll go into your hands anyways. You can even do this when both of your hands are full - my current Adventurer (who singlehandedly brought the world from the Age of Myth to the Age of Heroes over the course of one year) has 6 weapons in his left hand (a whip, a two-handed sword, a pike, two spears, and a pick) and 6 shields in his right hand (which is probably why he's survived for so long).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

It's even funnier if I killed a megabeast with it. The schoolkids will never believe their History Teacher ever.
