Uh. Yeah, I guess, phoenix breathing fire is more fun. And easier to identify as a phoenix. Now there's a question what a phoenix would be most likely to attack: a goblin, an elf, or a dwarf... I think a dwarf.

The answer is whichever one made a hat out of his mate's bones.

So yes, the dwarf.

His mate was cranky all day about it.

Also his skull is still being used alternately as a codpiece/chamberpot.

Well, I guess. I'm doubtful whether... by the way, what are your feathers made of?

Colored it. And it's probably all metal, like a robot should be. Maybe adamantine, maybe titanium.

The jets on the back provide propulsion, and their overburn wreathes the tail in flames.

He. Pretty eyes. I'm doubtful whether such wings will hold it. And I guess I'll have to do some colouring, too. Coloured fire looks much more impressive than black and white... Argh! Are you sure feathered wings for a mechanical bird make sense?

I'm not sure they don't. If it is to be a bird, not a bat, then it needs something feathery to make its wings look birdlike.

Feathers are used by real birds to control the aerodynamic property of the wing during different phases of the flap cycle, so I suppose a robot bird would use them for the same purpose, just using larger "feathers" to account for difference in sophistication and mass.

My problem is that in planes they don't use feathers. But I guess that's more about cost of production than about aerodynamics. Also I fear it's not going to look mechanical enough.

Planes are fixed-wing. They don't flap. A robot phoenix will flap. By turning the feathers, it will reduce the wing's drag on the upward motion, and restore it on the downward motion, achieving lift. That's part of how bird wings work, in addition to the folding.

Btw, addition:

That makes sense.
And that's cool. Although the dwarf isn't supposed to be scared - he's chasing an alien and its suit.
